The PlayStation 5 has been out for a few years now, having launched in November 2020. Over those four years, rumors have been circulating about a Pro version of the console for quite some time.
The wait is now over. Sony has revealed a lot of details about its most powerful console ever, along with a rather astronomical price tag. Here’s everything you need to know about the PS5 Pro.
When will the PlayStation 5 Pro be released?
Online speculation predicted that the new console would launch this year, and those rumors turned out to be correct.
Sony revealed all the details of the new console on September 10, 2024 and Pre-orders open September 26, 2024. The PS5 Pro will then be official launch on November 7, 2024.
The console’s 2024 launch fits in with the pattern Sony established with the PS4. The console was first introduced in 2013, followed by the Pro model three years later in 2016. The 2024 launch window therefore matches the PS5’s 2020 launch.
How much will the PS5 Pro cost?
Predictions suggested a higher price for the PS5 Pro, but the figure is higher than some expectations. Sony has confirmed that the new PlayStation 5 Pro will cost $699.99 / £699.99.
Additionally, it doesn’t come with a disc drive. If you want to buy one, it’ll cost you an extra $79.99/£99.99. The vertical stand isn’t included either, which will cost you $29.99/£24.99. If you buy both, you’ll be looking at a total of almost $810/£825.
For your information, the PS5 retails for $499/£449/$499 for the standard edition or $399/£359/$399 for the Digital Edition (without a physical disc drive). That means there’s a $300/£350 price gap between the entry-level console and the top-of-the-line option, and that’s before you even factor in accessories.

Design
The PS5 Pro shares the same design language as the other consoles, with a few peculiarities.
It’s the same height as the standard PS5 when it launched, but is as thin as the Slim version of the console. You can see how it compares to the latter below:
It also features a brand new set of black stripes down the middle, which differentiates it from the other models in the range. As mentioned above, this size does not come with a disc drive or vertical stand.
Thankfully, a DualSense controller is included as standard and users get a free copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
Performance and graphics
The performance and graphics improvements will be the main reason gamers buy this console, as they enable fidelity-level graphics at performance-level frame rates.
The upgraded GPU makes the console 45% faster than the current PS5. It features 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory.
Ray tracing improvements enable more dynamic light reflection and refraction, which can be up to three times faster than PS5.
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is an AI-powered upscaling feature that adds more detail and sharper lines using machine learning. PS5 Pro Game Boost also improves the performance of PS5 and PS4 games, and will even be able to improve resolution on some last-gen titles.
Several titles will receive a software update to improve their quality when the console launches.
In some territories, the console will support Wi-Fi 7, as well as VRR and 8K resolutions. There’s been no confirmation on the processor, but it’s supposedly capable of running at a higher frame rate according to TechRadar Gaming.
Storage
As you might expect, the PS5 Pro’s hard drive is significantly larger than the PS5 and PS5 Slim. You get a 2TB SSD, the standard console has 825GB, while the Slim has 1TB.
