During the create a hard disk for RAID or SSD, we have several options to do. We can do it with the onboard controller, which would be considered hardware, with a dedicated hardware controller, or it can make it for software in a practical way. But which is the best and safest way? After that we will explain the pros and cons of doing so in each process, too which is better.
Hardware disk disk
And motherboard controller
Configure RAID volume for hard drive or SSDs using the PC motherboard itself It's the most comfortable way to do it, because the whole process is done in BIOS and in a few minutes we'll have everything right without any problems. In addition, we will be using the RAID controller for the motherboard itself, so we will be independent of the software and, thus, greatly reduce the occurrence of configuration failures or that the error causes a disaster.
The advantages of this method are as follows:
- Easy setup
- Excellent honesty.
- Allows RAID for operating system volume.
- It doesn't matter what volume we use.
- There are no additional costs.
This route is not without bad things.
Dedicated RAID controller
This is another way to make RAID less efficient because it is required find a different RAID controller, and there is a problem that we will need to add drivers to this expansion card. Conversely, we have a trusted RAID system that we still do with the motherboard BIOS.
The advantages of this method are as follows:
- Very high reliability.
- Allows RAID for operating system volume.
- It doesn't matter what volume we use.
And so its benefits:
- We have to buy a control card separately.
- It is more complicated to configure, and depends on the controller manufacturer.
- It is necessary to install the drivers for this card.
- If the card fails, RAID can be disabled.
Create disk RAID with software
There is also an opportunity to create disk RAID with software, either through third-party software or and the operating system itself, including Windows 10. This method is also very easy to configure, but it has many drawbacks, which can do RAID at operating system volume and will only work for high volumes.
As a function of this method, it must be said that it is very easy to do, and logically it is relatively inexpensive. However, the downside is the following:
- Less honesty, because it depends on the system that works.
- It cannot be done with system volume.
- If a running program presents us problems, or if we need formatting, we will lose RAID.
- We load the PC with "virtual control", so the processor will always control the data and the operation will depend on its load.
So and with all this we told you, if you need to do RAID for disks we strongly recommend that you do hardware RAID, too uninstall the software as much as possible given that while it is easy to set up, its reliability is very low and we would in fact not earn almost anything.
