If you’re still holding on to your Galaxy S20 series phone, I have great news for you. Samsung has just expanded support for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, extending the commitment beyond the four years announced at launch.
In August 2020, Samsung promised three major Android upgrades and four years of security updates for its flagship phones. The Galaxy S20 series handsets, launched earlier that year, were among the devices included in this policy, meaning software support was set to end this year.
However, Samsung has now extended this commitment. As SamMobile spotted, all three Galaxy S20 phones are included in Samsung’s list of devices receiving monthly security updates. With no official announcement from Samsung, it’s unclear how long this will last, but SamMobile thinks it could be another year.
This isn’t the first time this has happened – Samsung has a history of providing updates beyond the support period. However, it should be noted that these are security updates only. Don’t expect it to get the upcoming Android 15, for example.
More recently, Samsung’s commitment to software support has improved further. Its latest seven-year policy of OS and security updates is top-notch, even though it currently only applies to the Galaxy S24 series. Still, many older devices still get five years of updates, including some budget and mid-range phones.
While we don’t recommend buying a Galaxy S20 phone in 2024, there are plenty of other great Samsung Galaxy phones worth your money.
But if you already have one, there’s no obvious reason for most people to upgrade. All three Galaxy S20 phones have held up well over time. The cheaper Galaxy S20 FE would also be worth continuing use, but its software support has ended and there are no signs of expansion.
