Samsung announced the Galaxy S24 FE as its latest mid-range phone and while the handset looks rather familiar, it gets a few upgrades in different areas, including a significant one.
The Galaxy S24 FE (fan edition) is Samsung’s typical addition to the end-of-year flagship lineup, offering some features of the S24 but for a mid-range price. Samsung calls it “a premium experience that makes all of Galaxy AI’s capabilities accessible to more users.”
Let’s take a look at this year’s model’s improvements over the Galaxy S23 FE.
Software support
Let’s start with the most important change. Samsung has decided to give the S24 FE the same 7-year software support as other S24 phones (and the Galaxy Tab S10 line also announced today).
This means it is a market leader (along with Google) and the promise includes operating system upgrades as well as security upgrades.
With the S23 FE already a year into its four-year promise for OS updates, the S24 FE is going to last much longer.
I’ll get to the AI side later.
Bigger battery
We all want longer battery life from our phones and Samsung has done that in theory with the S24 FE.
It has a 4,700 mAh battery compared to the 4,500 mAh cell in the S23 FE. It’s not a huge jump and I think there should be room for 5,000mAh capacity in a phone this size, but more is more.
Combined with the new Exynos 2400e, even though it’s not a major upgrade, the S24 FE should last longer.
Bigger screen
The last big change to mention is that the screen size has increased from 6.4 to 6.7 inches, giving you more space.
This is still a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution, so it’s really size that matters here.
Lots of things
This means that the phone is relatively unchanged otherwise with the same set of cameras (50Mp main, 8Mp telephoto, 12Mp ultra-wide on the rear), the same 25W charging speed as well as other specifications such as 8 GB of RAM and two storage sizes at 128 or 256 GB.
It is available in blue, graphite, gray, mint and yellow colors.
Although Samsung is touting the S24 FE as bringing Galaxy AI to the masses, the S23 FE is already listed as a phone offering these benefits on the official page.
With the phone going on sale on October 4 from £649 in the UK, it might be a tough sell.
In fact, I’ve rounded up four great alternatives, including the Xiaomi 14T Pro which was also announced today for £649.
