Samsung is believed to be putting the finishing touches on the latest iteration of its flagship smartwatch.
Here’s everything we’ve discovered so far about what the Korean giant might be planning with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6.
When will the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 be released?
We haven’t yet had confirmation from Samsung on when the next version of its wearable will arrive, but leaks have come in to fill in the blanks.
SamMobile announced in April that the Watch 6 will likely launch at an Unpacked event in late July alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9. Korean publication Chosun and leaker Max Jambore were more specific, saying that Samsung will hold a launch event in Seoul on July 26 – and Samsung itself has confirmed that it will hold its next launch in Seoul, but did not specify when.
That’s very slightly earlier than expected, but roughly in line with Samsung’s usual schedule, which has seen recent Galaxy Watch models launch like clockwork every August:
How much will the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 cost?
As with the release date, there’s no word yet from Samsung on the potential asking price of the Galaxy Watch 6. But we can look at previous generations to give us some clues as to what to expect.
Here’s how the base models of the Watch generations lined up:
Watch 5
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (40mm) – $279 / £269 / $299
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (44mm) – $309 / £289 / $329
Watch 4
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (40mm) – $249 / £249 / $269
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (44mm) – $279 / £269 / $299
Watch 3
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 (41mm) – $399 / £399 / $429
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 (45mm) – $449 / £439 / $499
Prices have remained reasonably stable over time, even including the bump that many European countries experienced last year, so we think it’s likely the 40mm variety will hold steady under three cents, while the larger model just rocks those scales.
There are other models that have graced the catalog in recent years, including the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. These usually have more advanced features or construction, which may appeal to those who want the ultimate smartwatch. They usually display a higher price, as you can see below:
They’re both released around the same time as the main watch models, so it’s likely we’ll also see a Pro or Classic model this year – and further down you’ll find some clues as to which one you should expect. .
What new features will we see in the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6?
We haven’t had any official confirmation on the technical specs of the Galaxy Watch 6, but a few rumors have already indicated what we might see in August.
Return of the classic, disappearance of the pro
The big news this year is the potential return of the Watch Classic model last seen with the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. It was a more refined design that featured traditional watch styling and a physical rotating bezel.
When the Watch Series 5 launched, it was discontinued in favor of a Pro model aimed at outdoor activities and featuring a sturdier build, bigger screen and huge battery – no bezel . Now, at least at the time of writing, it looks like Samsung is planning to bring back the bezel, although we don’t know if the model will carry the Pro or Classic name.
We take a look at it at least, thanks to OnLeaks and MySmartPrice:
The renders don’t reveal much new beyond the bezel, except that once again there will be two physical buttons on the right side of the watch and none on its left.
Larger display
Ok, that might not seem like a lot, but tech leaker ice universe recently posted on Twitter that the Watch 6 will have a bigger screen, including an improved resolution.
The current Galaxy Watch 5 screen size is 1.4 inches, so we’re talking about a 0.7-inch increase. Of course, it’s all about scale, and with the tiny panels of smartwatches, those small increments can be bigger than you think. You won’t be watching Hollywood blockbusters on your wrist, but navigating the interface can be a little more enjoyable with that bit of extra space and improved resolution.
Ice Universe also reported that the new watch may feature a curved glass display and slimmed down bezels, perhaps bringing it into the realm of Pixel Watch design.
Larger battery
Dutch tech site GalaxyClub has reported that the Watch 6’s batteries will have slightly larger capacities than their predecessors. In the leaked images she found, the 40mm watch appears to go from 284mAh to 300mAh, while the 44mm variant will go from 410mAh to 425mAh. It remains to be seen how this will affect how long the watch can be used before it dies, but any improvement in smartwatch battery life is always welcome.
New processor
Not to be outdone, the processor department is about to get loved, according to a report from SamMobile. The site says that the Exynos W920 chip that powered the Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 series will be upgraded to an Exynos W980 in the Galaxy Watch 6, bringing with it up to a 10% performance boost as well as enhanced functionality. more powerful health tracking.
FCC certification confirmed the unsurprising news that there will be at least a few LTE models of the new watches, although it was almost a no-brainer.
Updated tracking software
One thing we do know is that Samsung is working on improving the software side of the Watch 6, and we kind of know what to expect thanks to a public beta of the upcoming One UI 5 Watch update. , which is expected to launch alongside new hardware. .
The Verge has summarized the main changes known so far, including better sleep tracking with a higher Sleep Score; personalized heart rate zones for exercise (as opposed to the standard age-based zones currently used); an extension of the Route Workout mode to cover running and walking; and an updated Emergency SOS mode that can now contact emergency services, not just your pre-selected emergency contact.
It’s likely that Samsung will also tweak the watch tracking hardware, but it’s good to know that there are definitely upgrades on the way, although they will also be rolling out to existing Watch 4 and Watch 5 owners.
That’s all we know so far. Check back regularly, as we will continue to update this article as new information emerges. In the meantime, be sure to check out our guide to the best smartwatches to see what the Samsung Watch 6 will have to overcome.
