Even if the AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card They have been on the market for quite some time (more precisely since April 18, 2017, and they are currently discontinued, of course), it seems that there are manufacturers who have found themselves with an overstock of these AMD Polaris 20 GPUs, as we can’t find any other explanation for them than today Biostar has announced the launch of its “new” white Radeon RX 580.
It’s true that the white aesthetic is gaining a bit of strength lately, and for those who like good PC aesthetics, it must be acknowledged that white is much more striking than black, especially if that aesthetic is complemented by RGB lighting. Now, between that and launching products seven years ago simply because they’re white… there’s a distance, isn’t there?
Who wants a Radeon RX 580 in 2024?
Biostar announces the launch of this new model as an excellent graphics card for 1080p resolution, and the truth is that it is a graphics card that in its day has proven to be excellent for moving games in Full HD resolution and even in 1440p in some cases. The Radeon RX 580 mounts an AMD Polaris 20 GPU (specifically a Polaris 20 XTX) with the Graphics Core Next 4.0 architecture manufactured by GlobalFoundries with a 14nm process.
This graphics card, which succeeded AMD’s “Vega” graphics cards, was launched in April 2017 at a price of $229. The graphics card, as we said, is 7 years old, so it’s no surprise that it uses a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface (when current ones use PCIe 5.0) and that its memory is composed of 8 GB GDDR5 with a 256-bit bus. Hey, 8 GB with this interface is not bad at all, even today, although well… GDDR5 VRAM is “a little” behind considering the memory handled by modern graphics.
As for the specific model that Biostar is now presenting, as you can see in the images, it is white, with a fairly compact size since its heat sink has a dual fan design and occupies two slots wide. It also has two DisplayPort video outputs and one HDMI, so it supports three monitors without problems.
This is obviously not a graphics card designed for a modern high-end PC, or even an average gaming PC. It is a graphics card that offers good performance with games at Full HD resolution, but don’t expect high frames per second in modern games, especially triple-A games that currently require DLSS/FSR upscaling technologies to offer decent performance even with modern graphics. But hey, it’s a cheap graphics card, good for Full HD resolution and… it’s white.
Of course, Biostar has not revealed the price at which it will be sold. As we mentioned before, at the time of their launch, the Radeon RX 580 cost $229 and if I remember correctly, in Europe they were sold for around $250. We think that a sale price of around $150 could be tempting enough to sell quite a few units of this model for cheap gaming PCs looking to play in 1080p. But who knows, they could ask for $250…
