DC’s Squadron of Villains hasn’t been very well received when it comes to film adaptations. 2016’s Suicide Squad (directed by David Ayer) was a huge disappointment, especially compared to its flamboyant Bohemian Rhapsody-fueled trailer.
Birds of Prey had a certain charm but it was a box office failure. In 2021, James Gunn created The Suicide Squad, which was supposed to be a reboot of the story. However, despite its campy feel, it was not the success Warner Bros. had hoped for.
Peacemaker and the Harley Quinn animated show were more successful. Both series perfectly balance crude jokes, stinging satire, and bloody violence. Maybe that’s why Warner Bros. has decided that the next adaptation of Suicide Squad will be an animated series.
Suicide Squad Isekai is the result of a collaboration between Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studios, a Japanese company behind series such as Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga. The new anime is directed by Eri Osada and written by Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara. On the character design work, mangakas Akira Amano and Naoto Hosoda.
Here’s everything we know about this unusual project from the DC world.

Suicide Squad Isekai Release Date
The new DC series will be released in July 2024. It’s unclear which streaming platform Suicide Squad Isekai will arrive on, but both Peacemaker and Harley Quinn are on Max, Warner’s exclusive streaming service.
Is Suicide Squad Isekai part of the new DC Universe?
It’s not. The Suicide Squad animated film belongs to the so-called DC Elseworlds, a group of films and series unrelated to the main DC universe.
The new anime will be a standalone story, highlighted by the term Isekai. In Japanese culture, it is a fantasy subgenre in which characters move around, are trapped, or are reborn in a parallel world. Stories of the genre include the cult Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away.
