Steam has been with us since September 2003, for over 20 years, bringing together almost the entire catalog of games that exist for PC. For this reason, it is not surprising that millions of users (132 million in 2021 is the latest statistic published on this subject) have installed it on their PC, even if it is to be able to play these free games that we are going to talk about below.
Most Played Free Games on Steam
We’ll start by saying that the data we’re going to show you below is taken in July 2024, so if you come across this article in a few months, don’t be surprised if the rankings have changed. That said, let’s get to it.
1.- Counter-Strike 2
The first one on the list probably won’t surprise you at all, as it’s one of the most successful competitive games in the world. Currently, Counter-Strike 2 has around 900,000 concurrent players, with peaks exceeding 1.3 million.
2.- DOTA 2
Another one that probably won’t surprise you at all. DOTA 2 is one of the most played titles for a long time, it has always been free and many other games are based on it, since it was the precursor to what we now call MOBA. It currently has around 430,000 players, with peaks of 700,000.
3.- Banana
You probably weren’t expecting this one. Banana is one of those absurd free-to-play clicker games that surprisingly became the top 1 on Steam when it was released. It currently has over 375,000 concurrent players, with peaks of 440,000.
4.- PUBG Battlegrounds
Since its launch, PUBG Battlegrounds has been the most played title on Steam every week for over a year, so it’s no surprise that despite being released a long time ago, it’s still one of the most played on Steam. Currently, it still has around 340,000 players, with peaks of 640,000.
5.- Naraka: Blade tip
It is also not surpr ising that it is one of the free games that most players have on Steam, since the truth is that it is one of the most addictive titles. It has around 160,000 players, with peaks of 287,000.
6.- Once human
Once Human was launched this same month of July and gave us a lot to talk about. However, its popularity has been decreasing as the weeks go by and, at present, it can only boast about 120,000 concurrent players, with peaks reaching 190,000.
7.- APEX Legends
Another one on the PUBG style list, which has never been among the best but has a fairly consistent and loyal player base. Currently, APEX Legends has around 115,000 players, with peaks reaching 205,000.
8.- The first descendant
The First Descendant has been with us for a short time, only since June 30 of this year, and the truth is that although it caused a sensation when it was launched, user reviews on Steam are quite varied (54% positive, 46% negative) and its user niche has fallen a lot, and it will surely end up leaving this top 10. It currently has 75,000 players with peaks of 120,000.
9.- Team Fortress 2
This is another surprise, and it’s for the simple fact that Team Fortress 2 has been with us since October 2007. But despite its 17 years of existence, it remains one of the most played free games on Steam, with a player base of over 63,000 with peaks of 85,000.
10.- Crab game
Another surprise on the list, as this game is the simplest one out there and has been on the market for almost 3 years, but despite that it maintains a decent player base. It currently has around 55,000 players on Steam, with peaks of 66,000.
