Dyson’s latest cordless vacuum cleaner is now available to buy in the UK. The Gen5detect is powered by Dyson’s new Hyperdymium motor, making it Dyson’s most powerful cord-free vacuum yet. It has a similar design and build to the V15 Detect, but with a few new tricks to go along with its redesigned wand. And, blessing of blessings, the trigger is gone.
If you’re imagining all that means it’s going to be expensive, you’re not mistaken – but you might still be surprised at how much more that is than the previous flagship, the V15 Detect, which is now widely available for around £630. .
The Gen5detect is priced at £849.99 and is available from Dyson.co.uk and Dyson demo stores from May 10.
As of now, no release date has been confirmed for the United States. All we know is that it’s coming soon.
There are two models of Gen5detect currently available for purchase and both have the same set of features and accessories, which includes the brilliant Hair Screw tool. The main difference seems to be the color. The Gen5detect Absolute is available in a purple and iron colorway and the Gen5detect Complete in a Prussian blue and copper colorway. Both are available online from Dyson UK and Dyson Demo Stores, but the Absolute will also be available from other selected retailers.
If you’re considering investing in one, here’s what we can tell you about the key features.
The Gen5detect captures viruses
Thanks to its new fifth-generation Hyperdymium motor (yes, that’s why Dyson called it the Gen5), the Gen5detect has the strongest suction of any Dyson to date, powerful enough to suck up viruses and particles too tiny as 0.1 micron. It also comes with an improved Fluffy Optic cleaner head that illuminates dust better, with a longer range than the V15 Detect’s laser. Dyson says it’s twice as bright, which hopefully means you can see dirt even during the day and not just in darker conditions.
Not only does it claim to remove viruses from your surfaces using suction, but – and this is really the main thing – its new fully sealed HEPA filtration system will keep them contained inside, rather than let out again to fly around the room.
Yet this protection will only last until you empty the filter into the trash. Because, like other Dyson cordless cleaners, the Gen5detect has a bagless system. So if you want to buy the Gen5detect for its ability to remove all viruses from your home, you’ll need to dump it outdoors. As it has a 0.77 l bin (a little larger than that of the V15), you will regularly go outside.
The new LCD screen turns information into advice
The Gen5detect has a piezo sensor, just like the V15, to count and classify dust particles by size, and an LCD display to show you what you’re vacuuming.
Dyson
What’s new is that the Gen5detect takes it a step further by indicating on screen when you’ve vacuumed an area enough and can continue, and the interface itself has been improved.
Disgruntled Trigger
There are other design improvements that we really like. First, the trigger is gone, replaced by an on/off button. Dyson’s V-series vacuums all have a trigger that works like a deadman’s switch: you basically have to hold it down during use.
Its function was to protect battery life – so you couldn’t walk away while vacuuming only to find the battery had drained in your absence. But that made the suction much more difficult.
Dyson
Dyson clearly understood this and not only removed the trigger, but also redesigned the handle and added a soft comfort pad. Now you can switch hands while vacuuming without the motor shutting down.
Battery life has also improved since the last iteration, dropping from 60 minutes (on its lowest setting) to 70 minutes.
Magic wand
But our favorite feature is the online dust and crevice tool. Dyson has found that people don’t want to stop mid-cleaning to swap out other cleaning tools and instead mess around using the main head. Dyson has therefore simplified the process. When you remove the wand, the crevice tool is already in place, so switching between that and the brush head couldn’t be easier. Plus, it means you won’t keep misplacing it (or is that just us?).
