Mass production of the new GDDR7 memories has just been announced by Micron. Everything indicates that these new memories will be used in the next NVIDIA graphics cards and, most likely, in those from AMD. The new memories will have speeds of up to 32 Gbps and will offer, among other new features, PAM3 signaling.

Micron is a major manufacturer of memory chips. You are surely familiar with Crucial RAM and SSD memory, the brand of this important memory manufacturer. It is one of the industry leaders offering advanced solutions.

As an example, we have GDDR6X memories, a solution developed by Micron which is only used by mid- and high-end graphics cards from NVIDIA. These memories are not standardized, but they offer some improvements over “normal” GDDR6 memories.

Micron’s GDDR7 are now official

These new memories use 1β (1-beta) DRAM technology and an innovative architecture. The new memories give us a speed of up to 32 Gb/s with a bandwidth of up to 1.5 TB/s, which represents a bandwidth increase of up to 60% compared to GDDR6.

Micron highlights that the new GDDR7 memories offer four independent channels to optimize workloads. These new VRAMs allow for better response times and reduced processing times.

Additionally, these new VRAMs offer a 50% energy efficiency improvement over GDDR6. This adjustment results in improved thermal temperatures and extends the useful life of the battery. It includes a new sleep mode that reduces power consumption by 70%.

They incorporate advanced reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features. These GDDR7 chips provide high device reliability and data integrity without loss of performance. It is not only an improved solution for gaming, but also for high-performance workloads and AI applications.

According to Micron, these new memories offer a performance improvement of up to 33%. Additionally, it reduces response time by up to 20% for tasks using generative AI, such as converting text to image.

For gaming, these memories offer an FPS improvement of up to 30% for Ray Tracing and rasterization compared to GDR6 and GDDR6X in 1080p, 1440p and 2160p resolutions.

These next-generation memories enhance the use of AI in gaming landscapes. Additionally, it allows you to generate adaptive stories thanks to performance and frame buffer scaling. Without a doubt, this statement makes us think that AI in future games will have enormous importance.

GDDR6X uses PAM4 signaling, but newer GDDR7 memories will implement PAM3. This new solution offers performance of 40 GB/s for more efficient solutions in future revisions of this new type of memory.

Micron says the new memories will begin shipping to customers in the second half of 2024. This reinforces the rumor that the hypothetical NVIDIA RTX 4090 could integrate up to 24 GB of GDDR7 memory with bandwidth close to 1 TB/ s.
