In case you’ve been living under a rock, the competition held every four years and pitting nearly every nation in the world against each other in a series of sports is one of the most popular events in the world. So much so that it’s had several video game versions.
The great torch of video games
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are about to begin, we thought it would be good to recall which are the best video games of this event according to Metacritic users.
One thing before we start is that due to its age, we will not include some classics in the top, such as the legendary Gold medal at the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games
That said, we can start with the list of those that have a rating on websites like Metacritic (sadly, these old gems get left out, but we consider them the best, of course).
5. London 2012: the official match of the Olympic Games
We open the list with one of the only titles that bears the nickname “The Official Game of the Olympic Games”. The truth is that in terms of gameplay, it was simpler than the mechanism of a pacifier, allowing to try the different sports of the competition. It has a score of 64 out of 100 on Metacritic.
4. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
Other video game sagas that have been presented at the Olympic Games, especially from the 2000s, are Mario and Sonic. The best thing that this series of titles offered was the possibility of seeing the characters of these universes compete against each other. Its Metacritic rating is a solid 66.
3. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
The most curious thing about th is first installment of the Mario & Sonic sub-saga is that it was marketed without a sporting event to support it. That doesn’t seem to have stopped them, since it is a true best-seller. And the rest, one could say, is history. The score with which Metacritic critics have evaluated it is 67.
2. Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
Although the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were a failure (becoming Tokyo 2021), that didn’t stop Mario and Sonic from trying to win video game gold again. The biggest improvement over its predecessors was that its graphics were much better. Its Metacritic score is 69.
1. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: the official video game
The most recent official game in this competition manages to take the gold medal (joke alert) on this list. While the gameplay doesn’t differ much from other official titles, this video game is fun enough to have earned a pretty decent score of 69 out of 100 on Metacritic.
And you? What is your favorite Olympic video game?
