It would be a THEAnd external device with which you can increase your PC space without the need for a larger case or having to open the equipment to connect new drives. Everything will be done externally, much more practical, economical and which will allow you to move this storage between different computers without having to do anything else.
What is a DAS?
The meaning of its acronym is Directly attached storage, and as we said and you can deduce, this is clearly that, direct storage on your computer, without the need for much else. Unlike a NAS, with which we can confuse, these DAS do not have a server connected to the network, so they will not be accessible from anywhere, only connected directly to the equipment we want.
Explained simply, this amounts to connecting a USB stick or hard drive to your PC. You will be able to have all the files they store on your computer, but through them. The difference is that DAS are more prepared and allow us to connect more than one disk, thus extending or exchanging its information and being able to have almost unlimited capacity.
Examples of DAS?
There are many different models and brands, although they all work the same. This will depend on the speed we are looking for, as well as the number of bays we need.
Among them we can find that of TerraMaster, with which we will have 4 spaces available for disks (3.5″ SATA hard drives and 2.5″ SSD units), as well as a speed of up to 5 Gbps thanks to its USB 3.1 Gen. 1 Type C interface This allows us to have a maximum capacity of 72 TB (18 x 4), which is really crazy.
However, this is not the only option, as we said, it will depend on your needs. For example, we have this other one from Sabrent, with 5 bays and the possibility of turning each of them on or off individually. In addition, its speed increases to 10 Gbps, and its maximum capacity up to 110 TB (22 x 5), we would therefore be talking about a DAS of much better quality than the previous one.
It must be said that obviously these products do not come with discs, and that we will have to attach them or buy them ourselves, although we can always reuse the ones we have at home, even an old Play or Xbox has units that serve us without any problem, for example, which will be a matter of completing the DAS as we wish or according to our needs.
You can have your own Netflix style library or simply as a backup copy of all important files on your computers. Of course, as we said, unlike a NAS, you will not be able to access it remotely, but rather via a cable to your computer. Although you can use it on both MacOS and Windows or Linux, you have the option of using a single DAS for all your computers.
