Intel offers a wide range of desktop, laptop and server processors designed to meet all user needs. While waiting for the launch of the 15th generation, Intel is working on a new processor that will be released soon, a processor with up to 6.2 GHz, temperatures above 100º C and a consumption of 400W.
We are talking about the processor Intel Core i9-14900KSa special edition and, as we can see, it will be a real beast.
Intel Core i9-14900KS
This special edition has 24 cores (8 for performance and 16 for efficiency) and 32 threads, the same as those that can be found in the Intel Core i9-14900K. It has 36 MB of L3 cache and 32 MB of L2 cache. The frequency speed is set to 3.2 GHz while the turbo mode is set to 6.2 GHz, so it becomes the most powerful processor
According to the tests carried out by the guys at OCCT, this processor has an average consumption of 331.58W and a minimum of 72.10W, with the maximum power recorded being 409.73W. Logically, at higher frequency speeds, power consumption as well as temperature consumption increases significantly. During the tests carried out, the processor temperature reaches 101ºC at maximum frequency with all performance processors running.
The entire range of Intel processors, practically since the first generation, has a maximum operating temperature of 100ºC, so this new processor is not a specific isolated case. However, this is not the ideal working temperature. The optimal temperature for a processor to operate without thermal throttling issues and reduced performance is between 50 and 70 degrees on desktops, while on laptops it is a little higher.
Most CPU heatsinks that can be found in the market cover up to 320W TDP. The media which carried out the tests does not indicate What type of heat sink was used? to perform the tests.
It is likely that a heat sink of this type was used in conjunction with a high conductivity liquid metal heat pass, such as Thermalright Silver King, from the manufacturer Thermal Grizzly, with a thermal conductivity of 79 W/mK.
Concerning its price and its possible launch on the market, we can take the Intel Core i9-13900 KS as a reference. This processor was launched on the market at the beginning of 2023 at a price of $799. It is logical to think that the Intel Core i9-14900 KS will most likely come in at the same price, or even a little more. The release date is also expected to be similar, so it is likely that it will be officially presented in the coming weeks.
