One of the biggest manufacturers of storage units, like Western Digital, would have a new solution in the oven. More precisely, it seems that they prepared the units WD Blue SN580 up to 2TB. This is an upgrade from the current SN570 units which, on the other hand, are very much needed.
Currently, WD Blue SN570 drives are some of the best sellers on the market today. The reason is that they are very affordable and offer excellent performance. But these drives are based on the PCIe 3.0 interface, which is already becoming obsolete with the advent of PCIe 5.0.
WD Blue SN570 drives are in M.2 2280 format and have a capacity of 250 GB to 2 TB. They belong to the company’s entry level range. Currently, they offer transfer speeds of up to 3500 MB/s, taking advantage of all the properties of PCIe 3.0.
Improved solution for the basic range
WD would already distribute new SSD drives to replace the current ones SN570 PCIe 3.0. the new units WD SN580 use a controller PCIe 4.0 x4. These new storage drives use a controller developed by PCI-SIG and would therefore already be verified.
We know about these new drives, not from WD, as some retailers would already list them. We assume these entry-level storage units will be introduced shortly. The truth is that the Blue range was already in need of an update.
These new units WD Blue SN580 will arrive in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. As we can see, the 250 GB capacity present in the current Blue SN570 disappears. It has a reason and it is that this capacity, today, is totally insufficient.
But be careful, because the Blue SN580 would come with a big problem. The first prices displayed are higher than the prices of the WD Black SN850X drives (including heatsink). We see how the WD Black SN850X 1 TB unit is around 100 dollars. The price listed for the Blue SN580 would be higher than this price, which makes no sense.
Note that currently the WD Blue SN570 1 TB units cost 53 dollars and the Blue SN570 2 TB costs 110 dollars. If it is confirmed that they would cost twice as much, the truth is that these units would make little sense.
Additionally, a retailer states that the WD Blue SN570 will upgrade to EOL (end of life, end of production) the next day July 31. We assume that the arrival on the market of the new WD Blue SN580 could be launched in the next days or weeks.
What are the features of WD Blue?
This is one of the most basic solutions the company offers today. They focus on budget systems, be it desktops, laptops, and mini PCs. We can find these units with M.2 and SATA interface, adapting to all kinds of needs.
These are units that are above the WD Green, which are basic solutions with performance limitations. At the same time, they fall short of WD Black drives, which offer exceptional performance and implement the latest technologies on the market.
As can be seen, the brand has introduced its HDD product lines in today’s market with great success. They are very popular units in the market and highly valued.
