The premiere of the new MCU film is just around the corner: Deadpool and Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26, 2024. Two trailers already released by Disney have boosted fans’ expectations and made the film one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
If you’re not a Marvel fan but are considering watching the movie, you may be worried that you’ll have a hard time understanding what’s going on. At this point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a massive franchise, and that can certainly be confusing. Fortunately, it’s never too late to get on this train.
Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool and Wolverine, said that the film is accessible to a wide audience, so you can enjoy it even if you don’t know much about the MCU. However, you will enjoy it more if you learn the origins of the main characters.
We’ve put together a guide for those wondering which movies and TV shows to watch before going to the cinema.

What MCU Movies and Shows Should I Watch to Understand Deadpool and Wolverine?
Here are the basic productions that feature the characters of Wolverine and Deadpool:
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
This film covers the story of Wolverine, aka Logan. It also features Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool – however, in a very cringe-worthy and laughable way.
Deadpool (2016)
The film serves as a reboot of the Deadpool storyline from X-Men Origins. It reintroduces mercenary Wade Wilson and tells the story of his mutation and his path to revenge.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
This covers another of Deadpool’s adventures, involving his girlfriend Vanessa, Domino, Cable, and a few other friends and foes.
Loki season 1 (2021)
The series introduces the Time Variance Authority, the special agency that will play a major role in Deadpool and Wolverine. This also explains the concept of the multiverse, which is extremely important to the MCU. Pay particular attention to the episode Journey Into Mystery, where the locations known as The Void appear.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Following a spell cast by Doctor Strange, characters from alternate realities appear in Spider-Man’s world. Watching the film will help you understand the concept of magical portals and any references to Spider-Man that may appear in Deadpool and Wolverine.
How to watch all the Wolverine movies in chronological order
If you want to know the whole history of Wolverine, here is the list of all the films in which he appears, in chronological order:
X-Men: First Class (2011)
A young Magneto and Charles Xavier attempt to recruit Wolverine for the first time. He only appears briefly in the film, but the film is a good place to start if you want to delve into the X-Men universe.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
This film covers the story of Logan. The story begins in the 1800s, but most of it concerns Wolverine’s present-day adventures.
X-Men (2000)
Wolverine joins Professor Charles Xavier’s school for gifted young people and becomes a member of the X-Men.
X2: X-Men United (2003)
Logan must fight a certain someone from his past who wants to erase all mutants.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Jean Gray unleashes her dark alternate personality, Phoenix, and Wolverine helps curb her destructive powers.
The Wolverine (2013)
This film traces Logan’s adventures in Japan, where he must protect his old friend’s granddaughter.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Wolverine travels from the post-apocalyptic future to the 70s and changes a timeline. The movie won’t be related to Deadpool and Wolverine, but watching it could be a lot of fun.
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
In the altered timeline, the first mutant wakes up and attempts to destroy the world. Wolverine appears here as the violent Weapon X. It is very unlikely that Deadpool and Wolverine are referencing this story.
Logan: Wolverine (2017)
The standalone film is completely separate from the previous Wolverine films, but it is considered one of the best comic book adaptations ever made. It takes place at an unspecified time in the future, with Wolverine as a tired old man, haunted by guilt.
