If you think there’s nothing more annoying than vacuuming, then you probably haven’t cleaned your oven in a while. But don’t worry about that now, because you will also be interested in this new technology from Dyson.
Known as ‘CleanTrace’, it will use augmented reality (AR) to give you a view of your floor as you vacuum – showing which areas you’ve cleaned and which you’ve missed – in real time .
At the end of your cleaning session, you can then scan the room with your phone to see any spots you neglected.
CleanTrace technology is made up of two parts: an AR tool within the MyDyson app and a phone clip. Dyson says it was created to improve the efficiency of vacuuming, using a lot of words like “systematic”, “methodically” and “effective” to describe the technology, but in reality it will make vacuuming better because it is so much more satisfying to wipe. purple stripes on a screen than cleaning a floor.
Dyson also points out that people are slightly delusional when it comes to cleaning. His research shows that people imagine they’re vacuuming for much longer than they actually do (not me – I clean for literally thousands of hours, or at least that’s how it feels to me) and that they are “random and ineffective” when they slip. the emptiness in the room.
But the CleanTrace tool cannot be used by everyone. First, you’ll need a Dyson Gen5detect vacuum, although it’s possible the technology will work with other Dyson vacuums in the future. You will also need to ensure that your Gen5detect has been registered with Dyson.
Next, you’ll need to purchase the phone clamp, which you can get from Dyson starting in June, and which will attach to the vacuum wand like you see in the official image above.

Once the CleanTrace feature is launched, you will find it in the MyDyson app. But there’s a catch: the clamp and app will only work with Apple’s iPhone, and even then, only with the Pro and Pro Max versions.
Therefore, you will need to have one of the following smartphones:
Then there’s the question of whether the experience will be as good as it looks in the promotional photos and videos, which take the imaginative liberty of simulating virtual purple stripes across an entire floor.
In reality, you’ll be looking at your phone screen while it’s connected to a vacuum cleaner, which, once you think about it, doesn’t seem as appealing. At the very least, it will increase your chances of your kids vacuuming for you.
We’ll review it and let you know what we think when we’ve had a chance to test it.
CleanTrace will be available from June 2024 on the Dyson website and in Dyson demonstration stores. The app functionality will be free, but the 104g phone clamp will not. Its price has not yet been confirmed by Dyson, so we will update this article as soon as it is announced.
