Not all people see it sound the same, and not because of the level of hearing we may have, but also because of the shape and size of the head and ears, the ears. For this reason, HRTF technology is available, but before going on to describe what it is and how it works, we must first explain some of the previous concepts.
Hearing from people
People can find the origin of sounds in these three spheres of space that we all know. In the same way, we are able to measure the distance to which the sound is obtained due to the combined activity of the brain, inner ear and outer ear.
The sound cortex receives signals from each ear separately for monaural signals, sending them to the cortex of the Association where they are compared and leading to information on the status of the binaural signal combining the difference in arrival time and the difference in intensity. These are monaural signs they come from the connection between the sound source and the human mind, where the sound of the source is heard before reaching the ear for processing.
This adjustment includes the location of the origin and can be attributed to the undesirable response corresponding to the location of the source of the noise and the location of the ear in relation. This coercion is called "head-related touch" (HRIR), and the decision (is a mathematical operator that converts two functions into three that represent the highest dimension) of the sound source HRIR converts the audio the listener would have listened had it been reproduced in the origin, through the listener's ear and in the reception area.
What is HRTF?
This is what we know as surround sound. It is a work that shows how the ear gets its sound from a particular place and space. As sound affects the listener, the size of the head and the size and texture of the ear can change the sound and affect the way it is thought, amplifying certain waves and finding others.
Generally, HRTF increases the frequency from 2 to 5 KHz with a resonance of + 17 dB to 2,700 Hz, although the response curve varies from person to person.
Currently, HRTF is used for both ears including binaural sounds that appear to come from somewhere in the area (XYZ). Therefore, a transfer function that describes how the sound coming from a particular area will reach the ear
How does this technology work?
Component equipment varies between people, because as we have explained, they each have their own unique ear. However, this technology strives to mimic human measurement to provide the most accurate sound possible.
HRTF specifies that the input of a given sound waves such as frequency and source location in the foreground (for game sound design, obviously) by extracting and displaying head, pinna and torso structures before the sound reaches the eardrum transmission equipment and the inner ear.
It sounds complicated, but in short, it just means that it's a technology that allows audio engineers to insert a sound line to indicate which position to listen to in each sound. There is some work to do, of course, but this is a topic these developers need and need to understand that is what defines the location of the audio in a virtual environment
