Which processors support DDR5 RAM in 2022?

DDR5, processors, RAM, support

The DDR5 RAM memory The next generation has been with us for a year now, since it was released with the previous generation of Intel Core processors. However, it was only very recently that AMD released its new AM5 platform which, for the first time, allows the use of DDR5 with its processors. So, and in case you have any doubts, in this article we are going to tell you what Intel and AMD processors which you can use with DDR5 RAM.

With Intel processors, DDR5 RAM is able to work at its maximum performance thanks to the integrated XMP profile, while for its part, AMD has released the AMD EXPO profile which does exactly the same thing, but with its own processors. Now we tell you this because when choosing DDR5 RAM for your platform, you must choose the one that is optimized for your platform because those that have EXPO AMD They do not have XMP and vice versa.

These are the processors compatible with DDR5 RAM

Generally speaking, all Intel Core 12 processors with Alder Lake architecture and later are compatible with this generation of RAM, and similarly, all AMD Ryzen 7000 processors for the AM5 platform are also compatible. That leaves us with two generations of processors from Intel and one from AMD, but keep in mind that the red team recently launched their new platform, which means there are very few processors compatible.

AMD Ryzen 7900X and 7600X

Let’s start with AMD, which currently has the shortest list since there are currently only 4 AMD processors on their AM5 platform and therefore compatible with DDR5 (we will limit the list to AMD desktop processors, omitting server and laptop).

Processor Cores / Threads basic speed Maximum speed PDT
Ryzen 9 7950X 16/32 4.5GHz 5.7GHz 170W
Ryzen 9 7900X 12/24 4.7GHz 5.6GHz 170W
Ryzen 7 7700X 8/16 4.5GHz 5.4GHz 105W
Ryzen5 7600X 6/12 4.7GHz 5.3GHz 105W

For its part, the list of Intel processors compatible with DDR5 RAM is much more extensive since, as we mentioned at the beginning, they have been using it for a little over a year and two of its generations of processors are compatible: the Alder Range Lake -S set, and also the new Intel Core 13 that they recently introduced.

Intel Alder Lake-S

Also, keep in mind that these last two generations of Intel processors come from “transition“, which implies that they are compatible with both DDR4 and DDR5, and it depends on the motherboard we are using, we will use one type of memory or the other. Then we leave you the list of compatible Intel processors, a little more summarized than that of AMD because otherwise the table would be too extensive. Also, as we did with AMD, we are only going to list desktop processors and not laptop or server processors.

Throughout this year 2022 this list will grow, because as we have already mentioned the Intel Core 13 were announced very recently with only six members, so throughout the year the complete list of processors will be expanded as new models come to market.
