Why do some monitors have a glossy finish on the screen?

Finish, Glossy, monitors, screen

On several occasions we have been able to see how some monitors incorporate a different finish than what we are used to, and there are models that have a different type of screen than the others. That is why we are going to explain in a simple way why some of these monitors incorporate this glossy finish, and how it differs from a screen that does not have any such type of brightness.

There are many different screens on the market, and as such, some incorporate a series of technologies or improvements that make them superior in certain cases, which is why we must always know what the exact specifications are to know if it is what we need or not.

The glossy finish allows for better viewing quality

As we well know, there are different ranges of monitors, and several can be specialized to offer better quality, others focus more on the fastest response time or a higher number of hertz. In this case, we are going to talk about those that offer the best possible display quality, that is, they can use screens which are very different from normal ones, mainly because of the finishing that instead of being matte type, they should be bright.

This has a fairly simple explanation to understand, namely that they use glass or reflective polymers, which allows them to have a much higher degree of transparency, allowing them to show practically all the light power of the screen. In turn, this means that this type of glossy finish allows you to display deeper dark tones, brighter whites and, in general, much more vivid colors.

The biggest problem that exists when using these screens is that it is necessary to have a very control of the light that reaches the screen, mainly due to the fact that this type of finish, as we can imagine, ends up reflecting the ambient light that we have. in the room. The display quality will increase considerably, as will the complexity of displaying the images in an environment in which we cannot perfectly control the light that exists.

Better quality doesn’t necessarily have to be better overall.

We have previously indicated that one of the biggest problems with these screens is that they are not able to prevent the reflection of external light from directly affecting the screen, and that even with current anti-reflective treatments it is not possible to avoid this problem. But this is not by far the biggest problem that these screens present, since the biggest setback that we can encounter is the way in which these types of screens affect our health.

By representing light in a much more realistic way, we have the problem that it can cause glare that ends up causing eye fatigue and irritation, one of the main reasons why this type of monitor is not usually used in offices, etc. On the other hand, we must also remember that all the aspects that allow us to improve the lighting and color tones of a screen end up costing more, so the disadvantages are ultimately also economic.
