RAM played a big role at Computex 2024 due to the arrival of new formats. XPGthe manufacturer of SSD and RAM, as well as other components and peripherals, presented its own portable console. Its great particularity is that it will be the first on the market to integrate RAM memory Of type LPCAMM2.
The DIMM format of RAM, and alternatively SO-DIMM for laptops and embedded systems, had not been updated in decades. Current systems and especially laptops required updating to this obsolete format.
Precisely, the CAMM2 format and its laptop variant LPCAMM2 were born to satisfy this need. This new format reduces the space occupied by RAM by up to 60% and reduces energy by up to 40%. Additionally, it is positioned closer to the processor and allows Dual Channel configurations in a single module.
XPG has the first portable console with LPCAMM2
We saw at the Taiwan event how several manufacturers presented RAM memories with this format. We also saw the first motherboards supporting this new design. Adoption, as they pointed out, will be much faster than many think.
The manufacturer XPG is one of those banking on the new CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 formats. They presented their own portable console which, for now, is called NIA.
What stands out from this portable console is the implementation of an LPCAMM2 module up to 64 GB of LPDDR5x type. Although it highlighted the maximum capacity it could support, it doesn’t clearly state how much RAM it will implement. It is possible that they will release different variants, one with 16 GB, another with 32 GB and a high-end 64 GB model.
XPG says this new console will use an AMD Phoenix APU, although they haven’t given any further details on this. It is most likely that it will not differ much from the characteristics of other portable consoles on the market with an AMD chip.
As they point out, they implemented support for spatial rendering, a feature that would be exclusive to this console. It has a front camera with eye tracking, although it’s not very clear how it works. This would be something similar to virtual reality glasses technology, but it’s not exactly the same thing.
NIA will integrate an M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 SSD, notably the XPG Gammix S55 model. The console can have up to 2 TB of capacity, depending on the manufacturer. It wouldn’t be unusual for them to launch a model with 64 GB of RAM and 2 TB of capacity, it’s not crazy either.
XPG claims that this handheld console is designed for a “circular computing product lifecycle.” The brand has not given further details and the truth is that we have no idea what this means. Maybe the case is made from recycled materials or the hardware can be updated, who knows.
Unfortunately, the brand did not give details about the screen. It will most likely be a 7-inch screen with 1080p resolution. But come on, that’s just speculation based on the features of the majority of portable consoles of this style that we’ve seen so far.
