YouTube premium is cheaper for students

YouTube premium has many advantages, such as the ability to watch videos on the platform without having to watch ads as well. However, the price of YouTube premium is not cheap at all: $11.99 per month. If you add to this the price of other subscriptions that you will surely also pay, such as Netflix or Spotify, it can represent a hefty expense per month.

However, we have good news for students. If you’re in college full-time, you can opt for the YouTube Premium student plan, which cuts the cost almost in half to $6.99 per month.

Next, we explain how you can get the student discount on YouTube Premium.

Here’s what you need to get the YouTube Premium student discount

YouTube states that anyone currently enrolled in full-time higher education should be eligible for a student account. Verification is done by third-party service SheerID, so if your college appears on their list, you should be able to.

You will need to provide documentation to confirm your student status, which usually includes an email address for your school, scans of your student ID, and possibly your enrollment confirmation letter.

Verification will need to be repeated each year of your subscription (up to a maximum of four), otherwise your account will revert to the standard YouTube Premium account.

Everything included in YouTube Premium Student

The YouTube Premium Student plan offers some benefits, such as the aforementioned removal of all ads. You can also download videos for offline viewing, have YouTube running in the background even when you open other apps, and the package includes a YouTube Music Premium subscription so you can download songs and albums from a selection of millions of songs.

How to get YouTube Premium Student

Go to the YouTube Premium website and click on the family or student plan option.

You will see the list of students appear, along with a button labeled Try it for free. As of this writing, YouTube is offering a one-month free trial of the service so you can see if it works for you. So, to start setting up your account, click the button.

One thing to keep in mind. If you already have a YouTube Premium account, you’ll need to cancel it before signing up for the student subscription.

A dialogue box will then appear warning you that you are being redirected to the SheerID site for verification. Click ‘Continue’ to proceed.

You will now need to complete the form to confirm your student status. Click Next to go to the step where you will need to upload your documents so SheerID can verify them. Once done, click submit and the validation process will begin.

YouTube says this needs to be confirmed immediately, but if there’s a delay, you should expect to receive your confirmation within 24 hours in the US and up to 48 hours in other countries.

If confirmation is immediate, all you have to do is enter your payment information and click the “Buy” button to complete your account setup.

If you have to wait for SheerID to verify, once you’ve been verified, go back to your YouTube account, click the profile icon, and select Paid Subscriptions.

You should see a notification asking you to finish setting up the student plan, so follow the instructions and you’ll be good to go.
