If you want: no comedy and more FPS gameplay with experimental weapons
playable: resistance 3 is streamable via PS Plus. Resistance: Fall of Man is blocked for PS3 (discs are pretty cheap on ebay)

The PS3 had a number of shooters that I would absolutely class as hidden gems. Death zone, SOCOMthe second iteration of Metal Gear Onlineand the Resistance Trilogy. While this alien-busting shooter from Insomniac never had the popular appeal of a gloriole or call of Dutythey’re definitely worth your time if you’re looking for a marksman with an arsenal of weird weapons that utilize secondary fire functions.

The first and third games are perhaps the closest high in life since you have access to all your weapons via one weapon wheel (the second Resistance game has this for a more traditional, gloriole-similar two-weapon carry limit). The third in particular has a nice “meh” story and what I would consider a sour ending to the trilogy, but feels the most modern of them all and has plenty of funny moments.

Some standout weapons include the auger, which fires projectiles that penetrate physical walls as its main fire, and a shield as its secondary fire. The Bullseye lets you mark an enemy with an arrow that allows your shots to hit the target, meaning you can even shoot around corners. The game’s sniper rifle has a secondary ability that slows down time, allowing you to line up headshots perfectly.

Resistance doesn’t really have comedy, but it’s a fun shooter with multi-faceted weapons as we see them high in lifethere’s just a whole lot more of them.
