After two years, the characters of The Dragon Prince run through the magical realm of Xadia again. And again they are split into two factions, albeit with adjustments and new characters added to the group. The dark magician Claudia has finally resurrected her father Viren, who was the main villain for the first three seasons, and in order to make his revival permanent she must free the enigmatic Startouch elf Aaravos. Claudia, Viren and their new boyfriend Terry have a lot to do.
At the other end of the court, young King Ezran, his half-brother Callum, moonshadow elf assassin Rayla, and Claudia’s brother, new royal guard Soren, make their way Break Claudia working to free Aaravos. In the first season, these two factions sought out the Arch-Dragon of Earth, who had crucial information about the whereabouts of Aaravos. As the season’s subtitle suggests, there is a a lot of of secrets about this guy.
And we’ve barely scratched the surface of it, even after a confrontation with the great earth dragon in the finale. Even without all of the questions we have about Aaravos, there are still many ongoing plot points we’d like to see answered in seasons 5 and 6. Let’s dive in and come up with a few theories as well.
[Ed. note: This post contains major spoilers for the fourth season of The Dragon Prince.]
So what is the secret of Aaravos?
Zubeia, the Archdragon of Heaven, tells the young heroes that centuries ago, Aaravos was imprisoned for essentially manipulating mages to cause political strife. It has been established that he was the puppeteer behind a series of murders and assassinations. So the crime is clear, but no one knows why he did this. Does he just enjoy chaos? Is there a larger scheme at play here? What we do know is that he is incredibly old and was one of the first beings to live in Xadia. He calls himself “the last of the greats,” though we know nothing about what the greats are.
Where is the mysterious prison?
All we know is that Aaravos is imprisoned in a prison in a place unknown even to the dragons and elves who imprisoned him. It is very likely that the characters will spend the next two seasons racing through Xadia to find this prison. But who will get there first? Claudia, Viren and Terry wanting to fully release Aaravos? Or Callum, Rayla, Soren and Ezran trying to stop them? Considering that Team Claudia has the prison map, they are currently in the lead.
Is Claudia permanently evil?
This season began with Claudia finally resurrecting her dead father Viren – and then setting out on a quest to free Aaravos so she can complete the resurrection. Considering she seems quite intent on her mission, even after learning that Aaravos isn’t good news, it’s likely she’ll remain an antagonist for at least most of the next few seasons. There’s a chance she might have a change of heart. The fact that she listened to her boyfriend Terry denounce her for unnecessary cruelty to Rayla certainly suggests it still is some good in her.
Why can Callum use primal magic?
In the show’s fourth season, Callum is still the only human capable of using primal magic. (Quick refresher: primordial magic comes from one of the six elements and can normally only be used by elves; humans use dark magic that involves draining life force.) We still don’t know exactly why he can use it when other humans can can’t – does he have an elf father? Can other people use it but they just haven’t tried?
Will we ever see Runaan again?
Probably! We have long known that Rayla’s guardian, the brooding Runaan, was not actually dead but trapped in a coin. As it turns out, her parents are trapped in similar coin prisons too. At the end of that season, Claudia taunts Rayla with the coins and while initially holding them back, she eventually tosses them to Rayla. Now Rayla has the souls of her guardian and parents (????) in a form that’s easy to carry! Maybe she can free them in the next few seasons.
What did Rayla do in those two years?
After leaving Katolis and her boyfriend Callum two years ago, Rayla went in pursuit of Viren and Claudia. Despite being a master assassin, she was utterly unsuccessful. We don’t know exactly what she’s been up to during that time, other than (1) being too busy to write a letter and (2) adopting a cute monkey creature. Hopefully the next few seasons will delve into some of Rayla’s adventures during this time.
Will Rayla and Callum get back together?
Does it count as broken up if they’ve never officially broken up? There’s clearly still tension between the two, even if they have yet to sit down and have a proper conversation about it. Still, they have chemistry and history, so it’s only a matter of time before they mend their bonds. We’re pretty sure Rayllum will be sharing a kiss or two by season six.
What the hell is Sir Sparklepuff?
Ah yes. So the little worm-thing that Aaravos used to whisper cryptic messages to viruses for the first three seasons spun itself into a giant cocoon… and then that chrysalis became a weird hybrid humanoid bug creature. Claudia, of course, called it Sir Sparklepuff. We have no idea what the heck it is, but it appears to be connected to Aaravos in some way, though he can no longer use it to speak directly to Viren and Claudia. Instead, Sir Sparklepuff communicates via rudimentary pantomime.
Is virus obsessed?
The final shot of this season is Viren with glowing purple eyes fading into black with shadowed lines slowly spreading across his face. When Aaravos owned Callum earlier in the season, Callum also had the same blue eyes. However, it should be noted that he also looks like this when he is performing dark magic. Has Aaravos found a way to play Virus more directly, or is Virus just regaining his passion for dark magic? The fact that it’s the last thing we see this season suggests it could be more important…
is callus obsessed?
While Aaravos seemingly released Callum after delivering a villain monologue, Callum is still deeply scarred by the experience. He even asks Rayla to kill him should Aaravos take control again. Aaravos taunts Callum, saying that Callum is destined to play right into his hands. It seems likely that this won’t be the last we’ll see of the possessed Callum.
Will Janai choose her people or Amaya?
Through the seasons, Sunfire Elf Queen Janai struggles between being the leader of her people and wanting to marry the fearsome human warrior Amaya. You may recall that Janai took the throne only after her sister’s death and didn’t even want to be queen. As Janai seeks to lead her people into a new era, her brother and several other political leaders feel she is abandoning tradition. As Janai says, when she confides in Amaya, she knows she can’t “have her cake and eat it too.” To which Amaya replies, “Just eat two cakes!”
As Janai successfully fends off her brother’s coup attempts, the future of the Sunfire Elves – and their own relationship – remains up in the air.
IS HARRO IN THE GO?!?!?!?!?!?
One of the most popular theories after the first season of The Dragon Prince was that King Harrow’s soul was trapped in his favorite bird. We haven’t seen the bird in quite some time (not even in the credits art), and considering every time Harrow is mentioned, neither character even acknowledges the possibility that he might be alive… Harrow is probably dead-dead. We’re sorry!
