My life changed forever when I got a copy of Final Fantasy VII in 1997 (losing those discs has haunted me ever since). While enjoying much of 2020 Make new, the original experience is irreplaceably special for me. I start a new playthrough at least once a year every year. Sometimes I just jump into a random save file that I’ve sorted my way through at some point. It has to be everything I own that can run it.

Since 2015, the remaster (not Make new) made the experience much smoother; and it’s always fun to occasionally play around with mods that tweak character models or apply upscaled AI backgrounds to clean up the image.

The story, the characters, the groundbreaking soundtrack with beautiful compositions and tear-jerking melodies pushes the boundaries of the rather boring sounds produced by the midi-driven sequencer on the PSX, it not only culminates in one of my favorite video games of all time, it is one of my favourites Media experiences, period.

Regard: Let’s Mosey: A slow translation of Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VIIin its original form, is an epic tale of identity, friendship, love and struggle in the face of insurmountable odds against seemingly unstoppable foes. I enjoy, as I did in my youth, blissfully losing myself in it. Its world of blocky igamesnewsal models may seem primitive by today’s standards, but to me its graphical limitations are an abstraction that paints a larger picture in my mind – one that no amount of modern, hyper-powered, bells and whistles game engines can ever touch .

And, yes, you were right, Aeris; it was always the only way.
