I will not object FIA European Car Racing Race as a video game show for the 2019 season. But for example, if it's not a sign, this year's beating, miss, and methods, it's almost perfect.
This has been the year when all kinds of high-profile games and promotions, from the FIA's biggest race series to the Professional Bowlers Association, got into video-imitation games. After complaining for years that the genre was contracting because of the licensing and production costs, I picked up those names every month, starting with the volleyball topic (Bigben Interactive & # 39; s). Spike Volleyball) in February.
Another reason that the racing racer is a good mascot for 2019 is that this has been a perfect year for the motorcycle race. The Codemasters, the metal cow of the previous one, dropped all three of its biggest shares this year – Dirty Rally 2.0, F1 2019, then Grid, its a great sim for a tour. NASCAR Heat, from 704Games, has gone from a charity and licensing career to no one would have touched a solid three-year car.
Bigben & # 39; s World Rally Championship game had a breakout year WRC 8, delivering an encrypted task-switching mode that everything KT Racing was trying to achieve And, hell, I'm going to count the demolition as a car ride, because I wrote about them years ago in a newspaper in eastern North Carolina. So Wreckfest it is an outbreak of food with a spoon cake.
All of these games have been, if not quite the video game of the year, a fun atmosphere around established groups and brands, full of microbroperatives and more to come that I liked, even to my liking, I was reviewing the business plan more than the video game.
But I will start this year's discussion, with Polygon front page editor, Samit Sarkar, and the big boys. If any of them are our SGOTY, Samit, I think it's something in the name recognition, because while they did things right, I don't think they did anything in part as creative as Wreckfest. That said, MLB The Show 19 it has been the highlight of the summer and fall, and I know you always spend a lot of time with the EA Sports & # 39; NHL series.
Samit: It sounds like I missed racing games this year – they are a great place to look, if you will!
As for MLB The Show and the NHL, I really enjoyed both in 2019. The show has long been considered a terrible baseball, and for good reason. It was a pleasure to see the defensive updates this year, which greatly reduced the times I was crying out in the frustration of an opponent failing to get rid of a runner. And Road to the Show remains one of my greatest joys in gaming, even though Tony San Diego's efforts over the past few years to create mode with dialog options and other random additions didn't push me with the needle.
But at least it doesn't set it as a mode for my favorite past work, the NHL to be Pro. It took years for EA Vancouver to regain the NHL's prowess after hosting the series after being devastated by tomorrow's series in 2014. And recent studio game development has put this Franchise in a strong position as we prepare for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. (Note that it may be a while before hockey jumps in, – NHL 14 has not been released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when those consoles were launched in 2013.)
Honestly, I was thinking more about the future than after 2019. I don't think it's fair or accurate to describe the year as a serious sporting event. Instead, I think that "as a working person" is a better word for work translated into sports titles this year. I can only say that all the players I have played feel strong and satisfied but in the end they had a painful experience. Do you think other developers have been taking the wind, if at all, this year, as they tighten up their next genre efforts?
Owen: I don't know if studios are taking a break, or reloading their efforts on PS5 / Series X games, or any of these are points to reduce the mechanical stuff and things that people expect from it. From what I understand, the power of the new generation will mean things like visuals (ray track, term I think I know better), load times (always a problem with sports games), and other health-related bonuses – as opposed to powering things in gameplay that we've never seen before. I mean, really, do we need new hardware to try different things analytically, or role-playing features at work?
The lack of change in solid and fun activities is why I admit this sounds like a time for professional video game work (and the choice of the right words, there). FIFA 20 and Madden NFL 20 he quit the media mode project, and while Volta Ball and Franchise's face were initially engaged, I never really saw any mode that burned his community. NBA 2K20Cut MyCareer remains the most important imitator in sports, and this year it had an unexpected growth with a work story that was really touching, cleverly told, with believable and admirable characters throughout.
I also don't think Visual Concepts gets enough credit for the depth of WNBA coverage. No, the WNBA does not have representation within the single-player career suite or MyGM – but many of those features can be replicated within the MyLeague franchise mode where the WNBA is located. If you consider this a very important effort by, say, the Apollo program, then video games have been around for a month. They have all the systems in place; they just need to touch down the single player and women's work in full harmony in team play. I thought we would get that on NBA Live this year but, you know, NBA Live is gonna be NBA Live.
Attention is once again looking back at my previous lines on motorsports: Methods provided by F1 2019, WRC 8, again NASCAR Heat 4 finally I brought a great sports sensation to the genre that used to hang its helmet in visual reliability and physics and stop there. There is a great role-playing storyline available in these games now. In NASCAR Heat 4, for example, I run for NASCAR's Wood Brothers cup, and I use my medals to fund my true guilty pleasure: my dirt party. If we agree that a career is the big difference between good and great sports, then I say that the biggest motivation for me to do stories is the work that has done their job. And that's why I'm so inclined to love it F1 2019, even though I know you haven't played it yet. What has chewed you up to bring you the news this year?
Samit: I definitely haven't been as hard on anything this year as you did F1 2019, so I'm happy to admit that if we want to go there.
As I mentioned earlier, I didn't go in NHL 20Become a Pro as I used to, because it was changed differently from last year's game. Instead, I threw myself into World of Chel to get the second of the best online series. In this roundup, I ended up being able to unlock Ranger gear for my Samit Sarkar avatar (which I know is a stupid thing to care about, but … tempt me).
I really invested in trying to succeed in the free NHL One Eliminator mode with him. I've been trying to climb a ladder NHL 20
As a long-time proponent of single-player games, and skeptical of online gaming on sports topics – in part because I'm not skilled enough to lock them up – I find it strange that I actually describe my experience at World of UC rubbing my sports news in 2019. But it is a fact, though there is no narrative to mention in the online section of EA Sports NHL. Maybe next year, I'll try to put together an EA Sports Hockey League team to do my news with friends.
Owen: I'm on the same boat. I have been the message of many of my gaming games, but I found myself playing online multiplayer over the years. Even inside NBA 2K20, where I found that playing within myself, knowing my limitations and not trying to work without them, I was able to contribute. Usually I was the best player in the (backward) multiplayer team at Rec or The Park, where my teammates focused on beating and playing on their own. Good; I enjoyed measuring my assistants with repetitive qualities. The important thing is that NBA 2K20 multiplayer is as big or as scary as casual or younger players think it is.
But I think we have to come to a conclusion. While I'm worried about that F1 2019 it can be seen as my personal obsession over GOTY wood, I think it belongs to the most complete example of motorsports climbing; as a game with a solid work mode that saw two logical enhancements for which we recommended other game titles (side placement, and career download wraps); with a multi-player suite and its attractiveness is at least equal to that of the work mode.
Codemasters experienced a crisis of activity in 2017, adding progress and other long-running features and building on them ever since. I feel like coming in F1 2019, it really does come and it represents something that all video players expect and I know that, living in New York, you're not driving, but is that a good enough trade?
Samit: I will let you know that I live in Queens, where it makes perfect sense to own a car! (Okay, okay, this is my wife driving to work every day.)
You made a heck of a case F1 2019. A year apart from the outbursts of the five biggest sports (Madden, FIFA, NHL, NBA 2K, and MLB The Show), I am excited to present the 2019 Polygons of the Year Award in the Yearbook which is highly underrated – and give it some time in the sun.
The storytelling file is a column by Polygon and ideas on the interplay of sports and video games.
