GoldenEye 007 for the N64 was released in 1997 in most of the world. In Germany, however, it was banned and referred to as “media harmful to young people”. But now someone has stepped in to pick up the classic shooter.
As discovered by VGC, Rare popular N64 game GoldenEye 007 is no longer prohibited sold, advertised or marketed to minors in Germany. This follows 24 years after being on the banned media list in the European country.

The reason the game was removed from the banned index in Germany is most likely because Nintendo and its partners want to sell the game digitally on the Switch. However, since Nintendo’s European headquarters are in Germany, the digital store in that part of the world must follow German laws. It all means that if the speculation is true and Gold eye is actually via which come to the switch NSO expansion plan or through a more direct re-release it must be removed from the prohibited list in order to allow a wider release across Europe.
In fact, only at the beginning of this month a Dying light Change port had a problem with the headquarters of the European eShop in Germany and the game is on the banned media list since its release in 2015. While the new port released on Switch digital in North America and Asia was fine, it was unexpectedly delayed in Europe Techland said in a statement that “Due to the nature of the content, the digital version of the game is currently banned in Germany, where the European e-shop is officially registered.”
It seems very plausible that Nintendo or another company involved in the complicated rights Gold eye wanted to avoid any problems that could arise from the game still being on the prohibited index in Germany and decided to request an early removal of the game.
However, until a message from Nintendo, this is just a good, but unofficial, theory.
