Sony's PlayStation Portal began life with many limitations and skepticism. But after a much appreciated update Added the ability to stream PS5 games directly from the cloudSony's PS5 companion has finally secured itself as a worthwhile accessory for Sony's current generation of consoles. It's still not a perfect device, but it has potential that continues to grow, and that means you'll likely spend more and more time with your device. Therefore, your battery may drain a little faster, right?
It's true – the battery life of the PlayStation Portal is quite decent out of the box and promises an average of 7 to 9 hours. However, if you're on a long trip to a place where you can't charge the device, you might want to try extending its lifespan even further. Here are some tips to extend the battery life of your PlayStation Portal.
Reduce screen brightness
This is a piece of cake. The brighter you keep your screen, the faster your battery will drain. If you're in a dark room, you should be able to keep the brightness near the lowest setting. However, you may need to increase it again to see the screen in well-lit places.
The brightness setting can be accessed from the Quick Settings tabs or by going to Settings > Display & Brightness. You'll want to do that for the next trick anyway.
Turn off the light bar
The light bar on the edge of the PlayStation Portal controller looks cool, but it can be a bit draining on the battery. Since the light serves no purpose other than to prove that your device is on, it may be worth disabling it entirely.
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness to disable this feature. While you're there, you can also turn off the mute button light. However, I doubt that a small light will affect the battery much, if at all.
Turn off haptics and trigger effects
It goes without saying that PlayStation Portal's haptic feedback and trigger effects are great, but they can also contribute to battery drain in games that use it frequently (this also applies to the PS5's DualSense controllers).
If you go to Settings > Controllers, adjust the intensity of these features. I would recommend turning them off completely if you want to save as much battery as possible, but even just reducing the intensity helps a little.
Set a reasonable time to enter sleep mode
Finally, make sure you set a reasonable time after which PlayStation Portal will go into sleep mode. This turns off the screen and reduces power consumption when you are not actively using it.
To customize this feature, go to Settings > System > Battery. The best time setting would be 30 seconds, but even around 1-2 minutes should help reduce battery drain when you're away from your handheld.
Once you've changed all of these settings, you should be able to extend your PlayStation Portal's battery life. That means more time to play AstroBotis the new Christmas level!
