Earlier this month, publisher 505 Games acquired Infinity Plus Two, the Australian studio that developed the hybrid match-three / RPG series Puzzle Quest. 505 games were announced this morning Puzzle Quest 3, a free sequel set 500 years after the original.

A direct follow-up to the 2007 surprise hit Puzzle Quest: Challenge the Warlords, Puzzle Quest 3 will again see players traveling through the world of Etheria and competing in one-on-one battles against fantasy creatures by combining gems to harvest resources as they are used to Cast powerful spells and abilities. The official announcement mentions a “3D game world” that is new to the series, as well as some kind of gameplay twist that is not explained. I suppose we’ll find out more as we get closer to the first version for mobile and PC. Here is a teaser trailer.

As one of the biggest and most passionate fans of the original game, I’m cautiously excited as hell. I’m worried about what the move to free-to-play will mean. What will monetization look like? Collectible figures? Buyable power-ups? I shudder to think. On the other hand, it’s a numbered sequel and not like any other freely playable licensed spin-off Marvel Puzzle Questand it’s being developed by the original studio so I have hope.
