Of course, a great thing is that both paid and free mods are available in the Creations hub. If you’re not sure what to spend money on, or if you don’t want to pay for mods, there are some great free mods to get you started. I’ve put together six free mods that will Starfield Experience. If you’re just looking for some light modifications or are new to modding in general, these are a great place to start.
Enhance the look of the galaxy with Color Filter Removal and Darker Nights
I’m absolutely thrilled with a few mods that dramatically improve the visuals of the game on PC and Xbox. The first is GTA_R0CKS’ “Remove color filter.” This mod peels off Starfield‘s meh color filters pl, which provide a much clearer image.

“Color Filter Removal” fits perfectly with HopeFulWishings “Darker nights.” This mod reduces the game’s ambient lighting to create a darker, more imposing image, which during evenings on planets and moons makes the darkness actually envelop and overwhelm the environment. Everything feels significantly spookier, and in my experience it wasn’t too hard to make things out. In fact, it makes the game more exciting. For example, making out distant structures in the distance feels more threatening since you can’t necessarily make out everything.
How about “Pitch Black Nights”?
If you are fishing near the Starfield Creation Suite, you’ll probably come across another mod by HopeFulWishing: Pitch Black Nights.” This mod makes the environment even darker. In my experience, however, it’s too dark. If you want to take ominous, liminal space photographs of abandoned buildings, it might be nice to turn it on every now and then. But for regular play, I recommend “Darker Nights.”
While Darker Nights is great on its own, the mod is made even better by a simple flashlight mod that increases the amount of light you emit.
“Vanilla Flashlight Improved” is a significant improvement
Litbeeps “Improved Vanilla Flashlight (VFI)”, available for PC and Xbox, throws a lot more light with your flashlight, making it actually useful for seeing further in dark areas. This combines really well with Darker Nights and Color Filter Removal to make for some excellent nighttime planetary exploration. The mod also removes the streaking effect that the standard flashlight has, so not only is there more light, but it also has a cleaner flashlight texture.
“Headshot kills every actor” makes for better fights and more realism
This mod by SKKmods not only improves the regular combat flow in Starfieldit can also loosen up the rigid nature of many quests by allowing you to finally kill essential NPCs (yes, I know what you’re thinking right now and I’ll answer that question in a minute).
To activate this mod, you must use the item that is added to your inventory once the mod is installed. This item opens a menu where you can choose who can be killed with a headshot: normal enemies, friends, yourself, and important NPCs.
If you kill an important NPC, you’ll likely break any quests they’re associated with, so this is really best suited for sandbox games, or you can leave the “Important Actor Headshots” option turned off and enjoy the benefits of headshot kills for regular enemy characters.
And yes, if “Essential actor headshots” is turned on, may destroy the board of Paradiso. Is this the right way to handle this situation? Well, I’m not writing a moral guide here, but I can say that in my testing it certainly made me feel a certain way.
“Shades stealth takedowns (KO or fatal)”
Shadedness’ Takedown Mod immediately changed my playing style Starfieldwhich finally moves the game towards more immersive simulations – which is something I absolutely love. This mod adds a new “Takedown” ability to the physical skill tree, with four ranks to climb through. Now you can sneak into an enemy base and take out enemies from behind without any fuss. Combined with the “Sense Star Stuff” ability, it almost feels like you’re playing Dishonored…in space.
Be sure to check out Shadedness’ other mods and improve some critical areas of Starfield.
“Starshards” help you unlock new skills faster
“Starshards” by _Ravageron is a neat little mod that causes various, well, star shards to appear on planets for you to collect. Not only does this add an extra activity to planetary exploration, but you also get a skill point for every three shards you collect. This is handy if you plan on adding more skills to the skill tree.
The Creations mod suite is growing quickly, so there will undoubtedly be more mods worth your time in the future. But improvements to the game’s visual style and combat can go a long way towards Starfield Feel beautiful and fresh again.
