In this seedy horror comedy, Naughton and Dunne play David and Jack, two college students whose chance encounter with a lycanthrope changes one of their lives and ends the other. On visits from beyond the grave, Jack begs David to take care of himself so he doesn’t attack other people, but David may have something going on with the woman nursing him back to health. This odd ticking clock movie is aided by prosthetic effects by the legendary Rick Baker that are every bit as haunting and mesmerizing as they were in 1981.

I’m a big fan of direct-to-video action movies, especially martial arts movies. But where did this love come from? A special week watching three of my favorite movies of all time: Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Undisputed II: Last Man Standingand blood and bones.

in the blood and bonesMichael Jai White (who is also in Undisputed IIand wrote and acted in Black Dynamite) plays Isaiah Bone (yes), an ex-Marine and ex-con who is an incredible martial artist. He is persuaded by a promoter named Pinball (Dante Basco) to join an underground fighting ring, putting him on a collision course with a mob boss (Eamonn Walker) and a slew of skilled fighters.

In this film, White takes on former pro fighters Kimbo Slice, Bob Sapp, and Matt Mullins, among many other electric fights. Taking full advantage of White’s incredible physicality and incredible kicking skills, the breathtaking choreography is a terrific performance of hard-hitting bodies in motion. —pete people

Featuring iconic quotes (“Do you prefer ‘Fashion Victim’ or ‘Ensemble Challenge’?”), iconic leads (Paul Rudd’s smile!) and iconic fashions, clueless is just that: iconic. Writer and Director Amy Heckerling (Fast times at Ridgemont High) delivered this absolute high school movie set in Beverly Hills. Loosely based on Jane Austen Emmathe film stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a wealthy and popular college student who takes “tragically unhip” new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy) under her wing.

To be honest I really doubt there are many people reading this who haven’t seen it clueless. This entry is more of a reminder to check out clueless again. You are welcome. — P.V

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of Walter Wanger’s 1956 sci-fi horror film updates the original’s setting from a rural California town to the bustling heart of downtown Los Angeles. The film follows Matthew (Donald Sutherland) and Elizabeth (Brooke Adams), two scientists and collaborators who uncover a terrible secret: humanity is being overtaken by a secret invasion of plant-like aliens bent on taking over the entire planet.

Featuring terrific supporting cast from Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy, not to mention a brilliant cameo by Kevin McCarthy (the star of the 1956 version), Kaufman’s film is a clever reimagining that updates the original film’s premise without losing any of its menacing paranoia. 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers Considered not only one of the greatest cinematic remakes of all time, but one of the greatest works of sci-fi horror cinema ever produced. From the film’s otherworldly opening to its iconic and shocking ending, it’s hard to argue otherwise. -THE

There’s no better time than now to see the best Quentin Tarantino movie of all time (and by far). I said it and I meant it.

Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s grandiose novel Rum punch, this crime thriller stars the unsurpassed Pam Grier as a flight attendant who is caught bringing money back from Mexico for an arms dealer (Samuel L. Jackson). When a bail bondsman (Robert Forster) is hired to pick her up, the two forge an unlikely connection amid a complex scheme.

There are many reasons to love Jackie Brown — Tarantino’s more annoying typing tics are greatly tempered by the fact that this is an adaptation and the electric cast includes Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton and a young Chris Tucker. But my favorite part of this movie is how damn romantic it is. The chemistry between Grier and Forster as two middle-aged people who unexpectedly fall in love is electrifying, and it’s one of my favorite film pairings to ever set the screen. —PV

Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s 1971 anime adaptation of Mary Stewart’s children’s book The little broomstick revolves around the story of a precocious young girl who, after following a mysterious cat into the depths of a nearby forest, is abducted by a flying broomstick to a magical boarding school in the clouds. There, Mary is tutored in magic and uncovers a terrifying secret about a rare flower whose immense magical properties threaten the entire world if it falls into the wrong hands.

Although perhaps lacking the thematic or emotional clarity of films like Kiki’s delivery servicee or Princess Mononoke, Maria and the witch’s flower is a visually stunning film nonetheless, and a serious love letter from some of the studio’s most talented former artists and animators to Studio Ghibli’s work. -THE
