Super mario 64 is a good game. But would you pay $ 1.5 million for a copy of it? Probably not. But someone just did it.

Today a highly rated and fully sealed copy of the Nintendo 64 classic Super mario 64 sold at auction for a staggering $ 1,560,000. This beats the previous record for a single video game auction held by an extremely rare copy of The legend of Zelda and was only discontinued a few days ago. This rare game sold for an impressive $ 870,000 on July 9th.

Auctioned by the popular auction house Heritage Auctions, this copy of Super mario 64 received a 9.8 rating on the Wata scale. Because of this high rating, it is only one of fewer than five known sealed copies in such incredible condition, according to Heritage Auctions. The auction started on July 9th and ended today, July 11th. Even before the auction started, this copy was from Mario 64 was makes headlines with a starting price of $ 100,000.

After selling for 1.5 million today, this new record for a single video game auction beats the just-set record of $ 870,000. Before that, the record was held by an NES copy of Super mario bros that sold for $ 660k in April of this year. The new record of $ 1.5 million is more than double the old April record and almost double the recent record of $ 870,000.

All of this money spent on old video games makes me a little sick. I can only imagine what a fraction of all that money could do to help so many people around the world. But people like it hide their property and wealth in strange ways, I get it. (I mean I don’t get it. I’m not rich.)

It’s not just video games that fetch enormous prices at online auction houses. Pokémon cards are getting more and more expensive, with rare cards that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. As with rare video games, these prices continue to skyrocket month after month. At this rate, there’s a very good chance I’ll be blogging about a video game or Pokémon card that sells for $ 5 million in the next few months.

I’ve never regretted trading away all of my old video games and Pokémon cards.
