When manga and anime get live-action versions, one of the biggest stumbling blocks is how things look. Sideways or animated, a character and their outfit can look great; However, real life interpretation could look awkward or silly. That doesn’t seem to be true for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds.
Case in point: this reaction from Nausicaäs Wind rider outfit “Sea of Corruption”. (The photos below were taken by Twitter users Yoshi6054.)
Just look at all the details in the resulting replica, especially the flight helmet and the Shohki mask. The jacket is supposed to be made of goat felt, so real relaxation looks a lot more tactile than the manga or anime. And I love how the scarf is worn and partially frayed. This looks like something real people – not just fictional characters – could have done.
Artist Takayuki Takeya, who is perhaps best known for his Came riders work, brought the duds to life. The outfit was on Advertisement at the Exhibition “Animage and Ghibli”, which began in Tokyo earlier this year and is currently taking place in Osaka. The exhibition tells the story of Ghibli and links his birth to the manga A picturewhere the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds Manga was published and where the current Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki worked as an editor.
Will there ever be live action? Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds Movie? Who knows! There was one in 2019 Live action kabuki game, but there might be less interest in film adaptation. In a 2020 poll, Nausicaä was one of the anime Fans didn’t want turned into a live action feature.

According to Toshio Suzuki, Evangelion Creator Hideaki Anno has expressed an interest in a live-action version. That could change a lot thoughts about a live action movie, due to Anno’s hand in creating the anime’s climate sequence. Even if Anno is interested, it may still not be screened.
“For Miyazaki, of all the different jobs he’s done, Nausicaä is the most important, ”Suzuki previously said in 2019. “There have been several requests to do a live action version, even from Hollywood. He turned them all down. ”But Anno isn’t Hollywood, and if that costume is something, live action Nausicaä could look awesome.
