Dragon Ball Super gets his second film sometime next year, Toei animation announced on Saturday. The new movie was announced on Goku Day – May 9th, because the Japanese character is for five and nine can be read similarly to the character’s name – which serves as a feast day for the entire Dragon Ball universe.
According to Toei Animation’s announcement, the new film will be in the Dragon Ball Super Part of the timeline so that it is part of the timeline Dragon Ball Z
Toei also announced that Dragon Ball series creator and longtime writer Akira Toriyama is working closely with the production team on the new film. Toriyama has worked on everything “from the great composition of the story to the character design to the lines of the script,” Toei said in a press release. All of this collaboration has resulted in what Toei calls a “Dragon Ball movie like no other in its history”.
Unfortunately, none of this gives us a lot of details about what the movie is actually going to be about. And it seems that the team wants to stay mysterious. The best advice came from Toriyama himself, who a Letter to the fans about the movie in which he said:
I shouldn’t talk too much about the plot just yet, but prepare for some extreme and entertaining fights that can have an unexpected character.
We’ll be traversing an unexplored territory in terms of visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride. I hope everyone is looking forward to the new film.
While all of this is still pretty cryptic, the idea of a new style and surprise character is certainly a tempting proposition for the first film in the Dragon Ball series in three years. But apparently we’re going to have to wait until we get a little closer to the movie’s 2022 release. Another open question about the film is, of course, whether or not it will hit American cinemas in 2022, or whether that release date will only apply to the Japanese market.
