The second season of Star Wars: Visionswhich premieres this Thursday, foregoes last season’s anime-exclusive format in favor of a showcase work from around the world from renowned studios like Aardman (Wallace & Gromit) and cartoon saloon (wolfwalker). If this approach whets your appetite for even more great world animations, don’t worry: a new animated series of Afro-Futurist-inspired shorts will premiere on Disney Plus later this summer.
Produced by Peter Ramsey, Co-Director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Generation Fire: Generation Fire is an animated anthology dedicated to imagining the future from an African perspective. The first teaser trailer for the series was quietly released on Youtube earlier this week, offering an impressive first look at this stunning new collection of sci-fi fantasy animation.
“I’m thrilled to be part of a groundbreaking, fresh and exciting project that aims to expose the world to a whole new wave of creativity and invention from a place that’s poised to burst onto the global animation scene,” said Ramsey in an opinion when the 2021 series was first announced.
“The films in the anthology run the gamut when it comes to science fiction,” he added. “There are stories that touch on other worlds, time travel and extraterrestrial beings, but all of these genre conventions are seen through an African lens that renders them entirely new. I can’t wait for people to be blown away and say, ‘I want more!’”
The 10-part anthology will feature work by emerging animation talent from six African nations. The process of curating and selecting the talent to contribute to hot generation was overseen by the team at Triggerfish, the South African studio behind it Star Wars: Visions Season 2 short film “Aaus Lied”. Triggerfish will be the lead studio producing the anthology Generation Fire: Generation Fire the studio’s second joint production for Disney.
Generation Fire: Generation Fire will stream on Disney Plus this summer.
