On Sunday, the final day of D23 Expo 2022, there was a great flood of park and experience news. On the park-specific panel, Disney announced some exciting things coming to theme parks around the world. While Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World in Florida are undergoing transformations over the next few years, there’s plenty happening outside of the US, where parks have grown almost as big as the country will allow. This includes three separate Frozen-themed countries.
Well, to be fair, a lot of the news from this panel isn’t super new. But as previously announced opening dates have shifted (thanks to the pandemic!), some plans have been swapped and others realigned.
Here’s a recap of all of the new opening dates and newly announced attractions coming to Disney parks worldwide over the next few years.
Disney’s Avengers Campus Land will enter the multiverse
California Adventure’s Avengers campus is getting a third all-new ride that will take place in the midst of a multiverse-spanning battle. This is in addition to the yet to be opened Wakanda themed attraction. The yet-to-be-titled multiverse ride will feature King Thanos for the first time in the MCU. There’s no date set for the opening, and considering the second Avengers campus attraction is still ongoing, it’s likely going to be some time yet.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is coming to California in 2023
The Orlando version of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway replaced Hollywood Studios’ The Great Movie Ride in early 2020. The Disneyland version was scheduled to open in Toontown this year but was pushed back to early 2023.
Pacific Wharf is getting a Big Hero 6 makeover
The San Francisco-inspired area of California Adventure is transformed into San Fransokyo, the futuristic city as seen in big hero 6. This area will feature a meet-and-greet with medical attendant Baymax and teenage genius Hiro. There is no set date when this revision will be complete.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will finally open in 2024
The long-overdue makeover of the controversial Splash Mountain attraction will open in late 2024. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which takes place in both Disneyland and Disney World, takes place after the events of The Princess and the Frog and follows princess and restaurant owner Tiana on her journey to the bayou and invites guests to a carnival celebration. The revision was announced in summer 2020. Much of the original cast – including Anika Noni Rose as Tiana and Bruno Campos as Naveen – returns to score the ride.
The next phase of Epcot will be completed in 2023
Three years ago, at D23 2019, Disney announced major changes at Epcot Park in Orlando. And in 2023, many of those major overhauls will finally be complete. This includes the redesign of the opening area, now called the World Celebration, and the opening of the Moiana
Don’t forget Magic Kingdom
The Tron Lightcycle ride will open at Disney World’s Tomorrowland in 2023. And a meet-and-greet with the Haunted Mansion’s Hatbox Ghost will also make its debut in 2023.
Frozen lands galore
Three parks worldwide are getting Frozen-themed expansions.
The previously announced Frozen Land for Hong Kong Disneyland will open in late 2023. And now Disneyland Paris will have a Frozen land next to a Disneyland Paris Tangled-Themed attraction. Frozen’s presence at Tokyo Disney Resort will be slightly different; Instead of a full-fledged country, it will be integrated into the Fantasy Springs expansion alongside Tangled and Peter Pan.
Additionally, the Zootopia expansion for Shanghai Disneyland is still ongoing, although there’s no opening date yet.
The new Disney Treasure cruise ship will launch in 2024
Disney Treasure will set sail in 2024, immersing guests in an adventurous setting inspired by Asia and Africa – as well as Disney’s fantasy land of Agrabah Aladdin. The main statue in the center of the atrium depicts Aladdin, Jasmine and the magic carpet.
Before that, however, Disney Cruise Lines will offer limited-time engagements in Australia and New Zealand in late 2023 and launch the cruise line’s first South Pacific circuits.
New Disney 100th Anniversary Shows
The Walt Disney Company turns 100 next year and wouldn’t be complete without a big celebration in the parks. Two new fireworks shows will be held at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim: World of Color – One, a re-imagining of the popular World of Color fireworks show, will debut in California Adventure, while Wondrous Journeys, a show that pays homage to all 60 Disney animated motion pictures will fly you take to the skies at Disneyland. Also, the popular Magic Happens parade will return next year.
Meanwhile, Epcot will be getting a new show in late 2023, although the details have not yet been announced. And Hong Kong Disneyland is getting a brand new statue of Walt and Mickey.
And some exciting speculation about the distant future…
At the presentation, Disney showed some concept art for preliminary ideas. one was one charm and coconut-themed area in the room behind the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disney World’s Frontierland, and an alternate version envisioned a Disney villain rampage instead.
Another theoretical revision concerns the renaming of Zootopia and Moana in the outdated Dinoland USA section of Animal Kingdom. The Zootopia integration seemed pretty straightforward, but the Moiana integration would theoretically include “creatures from the deep.” All of this was presented to D23 viewers as a big “What if?” That means reactions could drive more of Disney’s plans than ever before.
