The classic PS2 launch game, TimeSplitterswas originally released in 2000 and developed by the brand new studio Free Radical Design, which consists of key figures from the studio Rare. These were the people who worked on Gold eye And Perfect darknesswith the aim of recapturing that magic – and they succeeded. The century-long multi-protagonist shooter was instantly popular and spawned two more equally popular sequels, with a fourth in development before everything started to go wrong for Free Radical.
In 2008, the company went bankrupt after the flop of hazeand the sudden lifting of Star Wars: Battlefront IIIalthough it was claimed to be almost finished. It was bought by Crytek in 2009, but that was a complete disaster and in 2014 the whole building fell apart. All this left the TimeSplitters Franchise owned by Deep Silver, which inevitably became part of the Embracer Group in 2018.
So you’ll never guess what happened next: Embracer revived Free Radical in 2021, including the original developers, with the goal of creating a new TimeSplitters game before he messes up the whole situation like only Embracer can. After a “restructuring” the company was closed two years later and TimeSplitters 4 once again thrown into limbo.
So even though a new game seems doomed for all eternity, there will soon be at least a much easier way to play the beloved original on your PS4 or PS5.
