After months of praise from critics and audiences Stand out series can now add “Emmy nominated” to his list of superlatives. annual television awards Show has just full list of this year’s nomineesand while the adjustment of the post-apocalyptic RPG games didn’t receive a ton of nominations, but it did receive two significant nominations: one for the show as a whole and one for star Walton Goggins.
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 15th. Stand out will be up for Goggins in both the Original Drama Series and Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series categories. It’s a well-deserved nomination for the series, which does an excellent job of weaving multiple storylines into a cohesive plot, with the games’ signature satirical yet poignant tone. Goggins deserves just as much praise for essentially pulling dual roles as Cooper Howard, a central element in the series’ flashbacks, as well as The Ghoul, a central figure in the “current” timeline. Even with those two nominations, it feels like an insult to leave out Ella Purnell, who portrays Lucy, the series’ de facto lead.
This is the third year in a row that a video game adaptation has found its way among the nominees. 2022 saw League of Legends show Arcane take home the most outstanding animation program, while HBO’s The last of us received 24 nominations (including Outstanding Drama Series) and four awards. This year Stand out should enjoy the honor of being nominated, because the chance that it (or Goggins) will actually take home an award is pretty slim. That’s because of a small series called Shogun.
FX’s truly epic adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 book of the same name received 25 nominations and will likely take home most of them at the awards ceremony. Shogun is a masterful drama series full of political intrigue and incredible characters, all held together by one of the strongest casts in a series in years. The series is led by legendary actor Hiroyuki Sanada, alongside a stunning performance by Anna Sawai (both nominated) and numerous other unforgettable supporting actors. Shogun is also the second foreign language program in the history of the awards to receive a nomination for the Original Drama Series category – the first was Squid Game in 2022. Interestingly, the first television adaptation of Shogun also received a number of nominations at the 1981 Emmys, ultimately winning the award for Outstanding Miniseries. Stand out is that it’s unlikely that a video game adaptation will take home the big award this year.
