Get ready for another new adventure with Kazuma Kiryu – this time in a live-action TV show.
In June, we first learned that Amazon was adapting the Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) video game series into a Japanese live-action series. We knew it would be a six-episode series, released in two parts of three episodes each—the first episode on October 24 and the rest on November 1—and that it would feature Kiryu (played by Ryoma Takeuchi from Kamen Rider
The gangster soap opera Like a Dragon was a huge success both in Japan and abroad. The series includes nine main games, numerous spin-offs, and numerous adaptations in other media. (Perhaps most significant for this project: Takashi Miike directed.) Like a Dragon: The Movie
The Like a dragon The show follows Prime Video’s highly successful adaptation of the Fallout video game series and the entertainment industry’s greater interest in adapting major video games.
The film is directed by Masaharu Take, the story is by Sean Crouch and Yugo Nakamura, and the Japanese screenplay is by Yoshida Yasuhiro and Yamada Kana.
The biggest question that remains: will the show feature the game series’ famous minigames (and their delightfully silly tone)? I’m looking forward to seeing Dondoko Island in live-action or someone trying to become a Sujimon master. Since the series is apparently adapting the first game, the chances seem pretty slim, but we can dream.
