A new Pokemon Game means, well, new Pokémon and Pokémon Legends: Arceus is no exception. And while the latest installment in Nintendo’s flagship RPG franchise may deviate from the series’ fundamental elements in interesting ways with its fluid, open-world gameplay, some of these debut Pokémon still have unique evolution requirements that aren’t obvious at first blush.

Let’s take Ursaluna for example. A new, third stage of evolution for the teddiursa/primordial ring Family, Ursaluna expands the singular Normal typing of its predecessors with a secondary Ground attribute, expanding the number of moves it learns and beyond STAB (Attack bonus of the same type). A unique Ursaluna can also be used as a mount, which has the special ability to dig up valuable items, such as the peat blocks in the Crimson Mirelands, which happen to be necessary to boost Ursaring development.

Whether it’s cultivating peat through excavation or fulfilling requests to obtain a larger bear, however, it’s not just about shoving the decaying moss down your throat. To evolve Ursaring into Ursalunayou also need to make sure there is a full moon in the sky (UrsaLuna…get it?), which can be forced by repeatedly resting in your camp until nightfall. You’ll know you’ve met all of these requirements when, after using the peat block from your inventory, all of the Ursaring in your party are marked as compatible for evolution.

get one Kleavorthat Scyther Evolution The Pokémon Company featured in almost everyone Pokémon Legends: Arceus Trailer so far, also requires a special item. To evolve Scyther into Kleavor, you need black augurite, which you can get in several ways. These methods include defeating gravel break open ore deposits with your Pokémon in the wild, or dig up treasures on the aforementioned rideable Ursaluna. Some players with early copies of the game are reporting that Black Augurite will also be available for purchase later in the story.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus also includes a group of Pokémon that evolve by performing certain moves 10 times: Hisuian Qwilfish (Use Barb Barrage in Strong Style to get Overquil), Basculin (use Agile style Wave Crasher to get switching region), and stands (use Agile style Psyshield to get Wyrdeer). In addition, Pokémon evolutions that previously required trading with another player (haunted to Gengar, cadabra to Alakazam, macho to Macchampetc.) can now instead be initiated with a new in-game item known as a connecting cord.

As you can see, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is more than just a simple remix of the traditional Pokemon Formula. It also rethinks fundamental aspects of the series, like how Pokémon evolve, and adds a unique twist that makes Pokémon growth seem more organic than just hitting a certain level threshold. Even better, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is so big and experimental that we’re sure to discover new details as we spend more time with the game, so stay tuned.
