Aunt May almost got cut off by Spider-Man on PS4

Aunt May from the PS4 game Spider-Man.

It’s hard to imagine Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 (and later PS5) without Aunt May. She plays a central role in the game and appears in many cutscenes alongside other main characters in the story. However, according to Dan Slott, because of all the wrinkles, Insomniac wasn’t sure it could make a realistic and good-looking old character in the game. Instead, the studio wanted her to only appear as the voice over the radio.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Marvel comic book writer Dan Slottwho contributed to 2018 Spider Manexplained the whole Aunt May situation. According to him, he learned this early on in the game’s development insomnia didn’t want Aunt May as a physical figure in the game. Although Aunt May is one of the most important characters in Peter Parker’s life, the studio worried about how wrinkled and old she was.

“You told me the reality,” explained Slott. “In your opinion, old characters – wrinkled characters – take a lot of work to make them look good and realistic. No matter what they could use to create five more characters. “

So the plan was initially just for Aunt May to call Peter and talk to him over the phone and radio and that she would never appear in the game as an NPC or physically modeled character. But Slott pushed that decision back, telling GamesRadar he was “adamant” that Aunt May had to be in this game and not just as the voice you hear on the radio. According to Slott, he eventually convinced Insomniac to add May to the game after telling developers that she doesn’t have to be so old to still be Aunt May.

“Look, Marisa Tomei [who plays Aunt May in the MCU films] isn’t that old, ”said Scott. “Aunt May doesn’t have to be super wrinkled; it can be less wrinkled ”.

Of course, if you’ve played Spider Man on PS4 or PS5 You already know how this story ends. Apparently, making them less old and wrinkled helped convince the developers that they could include this central and iconic Marvel character.
