Avatar 2: The Way of Water is finally released, this time really on December 16th

It’s a big day for fans of avatar, the film directed by James Cameron about people trying to mine the alien planet Pandora for its rich resources. The long-delayed sequel, set for release on December 16, is being dubbed Avatar: The Way of Water. A new trailer for the film will launch exclusively in cinemas and will be played beforehand Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when it debuts next week.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen occasional behind-the-scenes glimpses of the making of Avatar: The Way of Water, but Disney hasn’t opened up on any specific details about the film or the latest release schedule. The film has been postponed and rescheduled many times since its originally scheduled release in 2014.

For those who don’t remember exactly what happened in the 2009 original avatar, Disney is remastering the film and planning to release it in theaters worldwide on September 23. The sequel will continue to star Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a former Marine taking on the role of the titular avatar, putting him in the body of one of the native Na’vi of Pandora. While starting out as a spy among the Na’vi, Sully falls in love with one of them, Neytiri (Zoë Saldana), and eventually fights back against his own Earth military ready to destroy the planet in its obsessive, ruthless quest after a rare metal called unobtanium.

From the CinemaCon description: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the difficulties that follow them, the efforts they make to protect each other, the battles they fight to stay alive , and the tragedies they must endure.” We’ll have to see how The way of the water shakes, and whether it creates the same buzz as the first film in the series.
