Back 4 blood looks good. I’m a big fan of co-op shooters like left 4 Dead. But last weekend, developers Turtle Rock Studios confirmed that if B4B will be released later this year, an internet connection is required. Even if you want to play alone. It’s a bad decision, and yet it keeps happening.

News that the game is always online flew a little under the radar when shared in a tweet response during E3. But the tweet was discovered by VG 24/7 and others after the E3.

When asked why the game requires an internet connection on the PSN store, Turtle Rock confirmed that there will be no offline mode at launch. Although the studio added that it is “looking for ways”, it could support such a mode in the future. That’s nice, but it doesn’t change the fact that another game will just be online for no good reason.

We recently saw a similar situation at Square Enix Pioneerwhich also requires an always online connection. This game started with terrible server problems and people are still struggling with random disconnections and server downtime months after it started. Even if they’re just trying to play alone for an hour or two. The moment you lose connection to the servers Pioneer The game sets you apart from your mission, resulting in loss of progress and wasted time.

I do not know how Back 4 Blood’s Servers will be at startup But history tells me that I have to expect the worst and that means failures. Without offline mode, it means that you will not be able to play the game by yourself. This is not good.

It gets worse when you think about the future. If Turtle Rock can’t patch while offline, there is a very real chance that if the The game’s servers will shut down one day it will be impossible to play Back 4 blood. While this is true of many MMOs and battle royale games today that require servers to function, it at least makes sense. MMOs and pure online shooters are geared towards playing with and against others at all times. This is not the case with games like Pioneer or Back 4 blood, both of which can be played alone (even if their developers heavy encourage co-op.) Back 4 blood supports solo play with bots.

I really hope that Turtle Rock will be able to roll out support for offline gaming at some point so that the game will remain playable for years after the servers have been shut down. All online games that can support an offline mode should have one.

Until then, I expect a story about Kotaku a few days after that Back 4 blood starts with a headline that reads something like “Back 4 blood Players who are frustrated after server failures move on. ” History is strangely predictable, after all.

Back 4 blood will be released on October 12, 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One and PC. It will be available on Gamepass at launch.
