Back 4 blood looks good. I’m a big fan of co-op shooters like left 4 Dead. But last weekend, developers Turtle Rock Studios confirmed that if B4B will be released later this year, an internet connection is required. Even if you want to play alone. It’s a bad decision, and yet it keeps happening.
News that the game is always online flew a little under the radar when shared in a tweet response during E3. But the tweet was discovered by VG 24/7 and others after the E3.
When asked why the game requires an internet connection on the PSN store, Turtle Rock confirmed that there will be no offline mode at launch. Although the studio added that it is “looking for ways”, it could support such a mode in the future. That’s nice, but it doesn’t change the fact that another game will just be online for no good reason.
We recently saw a similar situation at Square Enix Pioneerwhich also requires an always online connection. This game started with terrible server problems and people are still struggling with random disconnections and server downtime months after it started. I really hope that Turtle Rock will be able to roll out support for offline gaming at some point so that the game will remain playable for years after the servers have been shut down. All online games that can support an offline mode should have one.
