If it seems so Baldur’s Gate 3 I can’t stop winning the Game of the Year award, you’re not wrong. Just this week, Runningtook home the ambitious Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game 2023 yet another prize during the video game portion of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). While taking home a single GOTY Award is impressive in itself, the latest win is a significant first. Baldur’s Gate 3 took home all five of the industry’s major Game of the Year awards.
The winning streak began in November 2023, when Baldur’s Gate 3 won the ultimate game of the year Golden Joystick Awards. The game then won the main prize The Game Awards in December the DICE Awards in February and on Game Developer Choice Awards March. Baldur’s Gate 3The win at the BAFTAs caps an amazing awards season that saw the game compete against titles like Alan Wake 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and more. It’s like that Triple Crown of video games, but with two more prizes… the Quintuple Crown?
Since the Game Awards were created by Geoff Keighley in 2014 as a successor to the Spike Game Awards, no other game has achieved this feat, apart from two titles that came extremely close:The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lost the BAFTA to the indie darling What remains of Edith Finch in 2017. And just a year later, Sony Santa Monica’s critically acclaimed soft reboot followed God of War Plus, it seemed like it was going to win all five major GOTYawards. Those hopes were never dashed by anyone else Fourteen days, which won the top prize at the 2018 Golden Joysticks. Most recently from FromSoftware Elden Ring almost took home all five awards until the BAFTAs chose Roguelike Vampire survivors as its winner.
Winning these five major awards is a testament to how special Larian’s extensive role-playing game is. Although there are different voting processes (be it by press, developers, fans or others), Baldur’s Gate 3 was able to win so many GOTY awards. With its excellent turn-based combat that truly embodies the joy of D&D and a stunning cast of characters that players immediately fell in love with and continue to love today, Baldur’s Gate 3 has something for everyone.
