When Battlefield 2042 languishes on Somewhere in hell between “failed launch” and “whatever comes next”, the developers DICE are making minor changes to the game to ensure it runs smoothly. Although I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of their latest effort.
When the game launched, it launched with a number of game modes including portal (a strange soup from older battlefield games and custom rules) and some small co-op stuff, but actually the main events – and the ones highlighted in the main menu under a big ALL-OUT WARFARE banner – were Conquest and Breakthrough.
Conquest is your default battlefield Mode in which players rush to capture and hold control points on the map, but Breakthrough was a more conventional style of warfare where two sides simply advanced on a map and concentrated their fire (and casualties) on a real front line. And while the former remains the most popular way to play the game, the latter now has the 128-player mode removed from the game.
In this update we are making several updates to the All Out Warfare rotations. Our main change is the removal of the 128-player version of Breakthrough. When reviewing the available experiences in All-Out Warfare, we felt that the 128-player modes are better suited to Conquest, where the gameplay spaces are larger and they lend themselves more naturally to sandbox gameplay.
In Breakthrough’s 128-player mode, we feel that the value and influence of an individual player and squad is reduced due to the increased intensity and chaos of combat.
I get what you’re saying and I understand that you’re responding to a lot of players’ concerns, but I’m really pissed because it was my favorite game mode. I loved the “intensity and chaos” of the fight, that’s it why i play battlefield
However, as I have found in the months since launch, many things i love Battlefield 2042 are things that long-time fans to hateand so DICE made the decision to limit Breakthrough mode to its 64-player version, giving everyone more room to breathe and romp, especially since half the maps are still played on their 128-player versions.
As a result, squads in Breakthrough 64 have a better opportunity to work together, flank the enemy, place a spawn signal, use their plus menu to attach suppressors, then delete and hold a point – a squad helps with that page to turn example. We believe moving to 64 players will bring back the pace that helps celebrate those moments of teamwork and PTFOing, and will be closely monitoring how our changes help improve the experience ahead of the launch of Season 1.
So RIP, breakthrough for 128 players. You were my favorite game mode, but the fact that I haven’t been able to play a game on Australian servers for months – because nobody else wanted to play – probably indicates that DICE is reacting to players with broader opinions on this game than mine.
