Battlefield 2042 is a game in dire need of an update! The good news is that DICE announced a few this morning that are coming over the next few months. The bad news is they’re not exactly going to set the world on fire.
The first comes out tomorrow and simply brings some fixes to the game (which, as it should be pointed out, is in a much better state now than when it was released). The next one is coming “mid to late February” and will bring with it something fans have been craving since launch: a proper scoreboard.
Right now, players can see some stats at a glance, others only appear at the end of a game, and even then most of these are broken down into your team’s performance as a whole, not your individual kills/hacks/spots/whatever compared to the rest of the server. This was probably part of a over watch-style lowering of the K:D ratio in favor of promoting teamwork, but battlefield Veterans were so unhappy with his absence that the team probably thought, shit, we better put it back.
DICE shared this work-in-progress image showing what the scoreboard might look like in the end:
It works out? However, it’s strange that once it’s broken in and implemented, it still doesn’t have everything you’d expect. For example, where is vehicle kills something super important to anyone who spends most of their time driving/flying? And why are they all shown in one big list instead of being split into teams/factions?
Also coming are “matchmaking preferences in All-Out Warfare and All Platform VOIP,” although worryingly both are just “still on our radar,” suggesting they’re still a while away from implementation.
Those things are fine and welcome, but they’re also things that fans would have expected from the game when it launched, and it’s disappointing to see a game that so badly needs real updates – like new maps, new weapons, and new specialists – there is still a need to make up for a botched start. A new map has been announced, but given the timeframe announced here, it doesn’t look like it’s arriving any time soon either.
in case you missed it Here is my review of the game which has a lot of big issues but also some 128 player battles that absolutely kick ass.
