Astro Bot is here and it is everything that many of us have wanted. It is not just a incredible 3D platform gamebut it is also packed with Cameo appearances by characters from throughout PlayStation history. As you collect them throughout the game, each character you find will be returned to Astro BotThe central hub, a crash site that slowly fills up. Once there, you can interact with them even more, but first you have to give them a little pat.

Yes, you read that right. Every single character you collect, Astro Bot has a hidden interaction that’s sort of a cute Easter egg for the respective series or game, but you have to knock some sense into them first. Once you rescue a character, they’re sent back to the crash site, where they’ll hang out in the sand around the central PS5 spaceship you’re trying to repair. The simple robots, not themed after PlayStation characters, try to fix the ship, but the rest stand around it waiting for you to interact with them.
When you visit a Cameo character at the crash site, you will likely see a floating icon above them indicating that they require their signature prop, which can be found in the Gacha Machine that returns from Astro’s Playroom. A pull on the gacha machine costs 100 coins and is worth it to unlock most items, including all sorts of trademarks of the various franchises, like a certain weapon or some sort of iconic stage design. Once you have those, hit them on the head.

There are literally hundreds more like this in franchises like God of War, Metal Gear SolidAnd Horizon. A bot from Jin Ghost of Tsushima Is literally stark naked in a hot springbut if you hit it, it will shoot towards Jin’s armor, put it on and start swinging its sword. Then it takes off its armor and goes back to its warm bath. My favorite – since Blood transfused is my favorite game ever – features the Yharnam Hunter. When they hit him, they actually fire their weapon and mimic Blood transfusedwhich is then followed by a visceral attack.
You can even get the characters to interact with each other, and some of these interactions are key to unlocking the game’s trophies. Considering what a simple platinum Astro Bot Isyou might as well try out all the interactions you possibly can. Even ones with characters and traits I know nothing about brought a smile to my face. This unspoken part of the game is one of the most obvious and joyful, and shows a lot of respect from Team Asobi for PlayStation’s hugely influential catalog. So next time you’re mindlessly running around the crash site, remember to give your favorite character a pat on the back and see what they’re hiding up their sleeves or, in Kiryu’s case, their deep pockets.
