The best new series on Netflix
Derry girls
Genre: Teen sitcom/dark comedy
Creator: Lisa McGee
Pour: Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan
My colleague Zosha Millman described it Derry girls episodes as “impeccably designed Rube Goldberg machines” and I haven’t been able to shake that description since. Derry girls follows the adventures of a group of young troublemakers in Derry, Northern Ireland, against the backdrop of the riots. It’s a fun and breezy 20-minute comedy filled with laughter and surprising moments of deep emotion, especially when the girls’ lives intersect with the broader conflict that’s happening outside their door. It’s one of the funniest comedies on Netflix and an easy pick for this list. —pete people
Also good: Cyberpunk: Edgerunnerthe new anime from CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger; The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, a food-centric drama from master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda; and The Sandmanthe live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ fantasy horror series by Neil Gaiman.
The Best New TV on Hulu
Reservation dogs
Genre: Teen Drama/Comedy
Creator: Sterling Harjo, Taika Waititi
Pour: Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor
Our #10 show in 2022 was #3 on my personal pick. Reservation dogs is a wonderful thing — a show about misfits who live on an Oklahoma reservation and want nothing more than to be far damn away… until that far damn thing actually becomes tangible. Fortunately, while Taika Waititi is producing the show, it’s moved away from his peculiar (and, to me, very tiresome) brand of humor and instead shines through award-winning filmmaker Sterlin Harjo and a dynamic cast of main characters and celebrity guests (including last season). a memorable guest appearance by prey
Also good: What we do in the shadows, the hilarious TV adaptation of the modern vampire mockumentary, and the last season of Atlanta, the “twin peaks for Rappers” comedy-drama starring (and created by) Donald Glover.
The best new TV on Prime Video
A league of its own
Genre: Historical Sports Comedy/Drama
Creator: Will Graham, Abbi Jacobson
Pour: Abbi Jacobson, Chante Adams, and D’Arcy Carden
A league of its own (the movie) is a stone-cold classic for a reason. It’s got a good story, lots of heart, and an ensemble cast that packed a punch in every corner. A league of its own (the TV show) works for the same reasons. But because it’s a show, we can spend more time in the world, explore women’s baseball for black women too, delve into the weirdness of the era, and have long talks about just how much work actually goes into putting together a baseball team from scratch. There’s still no crying in baseball, but it’s nice to explore the classic world of A league of its own with a little more nuance and just more Time. It may not be a classic still, but a girl can dream. —Zosha Millman
Also good: paper girl, a sci-fi coming-of-age comic adaptation that was unfortunately canceled after one season, and reachersa detective series that asks the important question, “What if Sherlock Holmes was absolutely massive?”
The Best New TV on HBO Max
house of the dragon
Genre: Fantasy/Drama
Creator: Ryan Condal, George RR Martin
Pour: Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy
It’s not easy for a prequel to escape the long shadow of its creator, but HBO has game of Thrones precursor house of the dragon managed to make it look easy. The story takes place several hundred years before the events of game of Thrones and builds his own independent and unique cast of characters whose schemes, intrigue and betrayals make for fantastic television no matter how much time you’ve spent in Westeros. In the show’s first season, which will air in fall 2022, she places the two opposing factions at the heart of a civil war and sets the stage for a massive dragon-filled battle that would fill the next three seasons. —Austen Goslin
Also good: The last of us, the mushroom horror video game adaptation and The sample, Social experiment disguised as a TV show by Nathan Fielder.
The best new TV on Disney Plus
Andor
Genre: Science Fiction/Adventure
Creator: Tony Gilroy
Pour: Diego Luna, Kyle Soller, and Adria Arjona
Aside from being one of the best Star Wars shows to date, Andor has the enviable distinction of holding the number one spot on our list of the best shows of 2022. Each of those two facts alone justifies the show’s inclusion on this list, but taken together, this well-deserved spot feels all but mandatory. Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) returns to Star Wars after his turn as co-writer in 2016 Villain One, delve into a origin story of the rebel captain of the same name, which also doubles as the origin story of the rebel alliance itself. The series meticulously moves away from the red, Easter egg-laden iconography that many Star Wars fans typically associate the franchise with, replacing it with a down-to-earth aesthetic and a tone that takes its universe’s stakes just as seriously as the underdogs Who man it.
Diego Luna, much like his character Cassian Andor, is the perfect lead for the job, while Stellan Skarsgård’s supporting performance as the Rebellion’s cunning ringleader, Luthen Rael, has quickly proven to be one of the best characters from Star Wars since Disney bought the property in 2012. It takes about three episodes to get into full gear, but once it does, it’s an exciting journey that you’ll want to see through to the end. – Toussaint Egan

The Best New TV on Paramount Plus
player
Genre: Mockumentary/Drama
Creator: And Perrault, Tony Yacenda
Pour: Misha Brooks, Da’Jour Jones, Ely Henry
Let’s go back to the old “where we ranked this versus where.” I did” discussion, player was our #8 show of 2022, but #2 on my personal list. I admit that shouldn’t come as a surprise, since player is so aligned with my interests that it felt like a godsend when it not only arrived on Paramount Plus, but it did actually really good.
player is a mockuseries from the brilliant creators of American vandal (itself one of the very best shows on Netflix), which follows a fictional North American League of Legends team and the drama brewing between its two star players. I’m telling you, this is where I used to cover League of Legends

severance pay
Genre: Science fiction/psychological thriller
Creator: Dan Ericson
Pour: Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, and Britt Lower
severance pay‘s stark sci-fi take on the modern workplace, in which employees at a company called Lumon are subjected to the eponymous “severance pay” in order to split their minds in two, is one of the most notable disturbing conceits of a series. Under severance pay is one half of a person’s identity known as “Innie,” the person she is at work, doing mundane chores and turning out at the required time. However, when they get on the elevator to go home, they become their “outie” — the person who exists outside of the workplace, perhaps with a family, lover, or hobby. Innies and outies know nothing about each other on purpose—an almost harmless way of exploiting the people who work for you.
A slight favorite among critics at both Polygon and elsewhere, severance pay speaks directly to a vague sense of unease felt in workplaces around the world, but it’s also just one hell of a thriller. Uncomfortable, with somber wit and steady dose of intrigue, severance pay has style and substance – a quietly angry show for an increasingly angry time. —Joshua Rivera
Also good: slow horsesa British spy drama about a bunch of losers (including Gary Oldman) who would like to win.

girl5eva
Genre: musical comedy
Creator: Meredith Scardino
Pour: Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips, and Paula Pell
It can sometimes feel like modern American comedies have forgotten the part where you’re supposed to be joking. “Comedy” can feel more synonymous with “feel-good entertainment” than “fun entertainment” and seems geared more towards eliciting a slight smile than a belly laugh.
tell no one girl5eva. The heir obviously too 30 rocks A hilarious entertainment industry comedy, it follows the members of a former girl group who decide to get back together and give this whole fame thing another chance. The show has it all: it’s surprising, it’s funny, it’s insane (free) and it has a banger theme that will stay in your brain for eternity. —PV
