Yusaku Maezawa, the billionaire who founded Japanese internet fashion retail site Zozotown, is the first space tourist to visit the International Space Station in a decade. The entrepreneur told AP that his self-financed trip cost “quite a bit” over $ 80 million. In space he’s done PR gag for Uber Eats, indicate the space station toilet, and talked about his favorite manga.

Maezawa has been criticized for going into space for a number of very obvious reasons – to which he replied, “Those who criticize may be those who have never been in space.” Maybe true, but that’s a pretty arrogant one and elitist statement!

The manga Maezawa brought back was that of Chuya Koyama Space brothers, which is about two siblings who are astronauts. The manga spawned an anime TV series, an anime film, and a live action film. Is this the first manga in space? I honestly do not know! Surely someone must have brought you to read.

The clip is in Japanese, but there is an English subtitle option.

In 2010 while on the ISS, astronaut Soichi Noguchi wore the same red arrow shirt that Susumu Kodai wore in im Space battleship Yamato Anime. I think that could be considered the first cosplay in space? I don’t know if Noguchi brought manga to read.

“I wanted to bring all forty volumes with me [of Space Brothers] and read it here in space, but that’s too many volumes for my payload, ”Maezawa said on a YouTube clip. Instead he brought Volume 27. The story of this particular entry that played on the ISS had a huge impact on Maezawa and explained why he wanted to read it on the ISS.

Maezawa was so moved when he told the story of the manga that he started crying. “It’s not PR, by the way,” he quipped, adding, “I really love this manga series.”

“I can only cry when I remember that one scene,” he said. “It’s amazing that manga can do that.”

The entire clip is about five minutes long, with Maezawa narrating the volume and the effects on him. “I can’t recommend this manga enough,” said the billionaire, adding that the manga is even suitable for children.

If this isn’t the first manga brought into space, this is it has to be the first manga to be reviewed from space.
