Every month, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Speed runs are becoming a little more strange. In that case, today we have a new category of playthroughs called “mount%” where runners try to ride every animal in the game. This includes standard creatures like horses, but it does Likewise This includes sidon, everyone’s favorite shark piece. After all, you’re riding Sidon during a boss portion of the open world adventure, so he technically qualifies here as well.
This hilarious concept was developed by the extraordinary speed running rider Joedun, who previously made headlines to finish BOTW 100% – with no harm. In an email, Joedun stated that this was originally intended as a purely Sidon challenge that came to mind during the harmless run. But, he said, it quickly became clear that the only way to make it an official speedrun category that’s recognized by the community is to put some rules into practice. It wasn’t long before he decided to include every type of mount just to make things more interesting.
The cool thing about this speedrun category is that, as of this writing, it’s the only one that fans have to do something with the Lord of the Mountain. The ethereal snow-white mountain appears only under extremely specific conditions – once on the day of a waxing crescent. For this to work, Joedun had to figure out exactly what was going on under the hood. It can be viewed in-game anytime within those 24 hours, and only if you are not fully in the Satori mountain region, says Joedun.
“It turns out the length of time it appears is also random,” he said, which is why casual gamers sometimes see the tricky horse disappear almost immediately after it appears. It is precisely for this reason that it is also the biggest “pain in the ass” during the run, he said during the video.
As an added bonus, the release of the run to the public is celebrated with a friendship contest. Those who achieve the fastest Mount% time by May 6th will win $ 100, although second and third places will also get some money for their problems. Better still, the announcement video shows the current route being developed by speedrunners for the category, meaning anyone who does this is not starting from scratch. This of course includes an entire section devoted to riding Sidon, the main attraction.
So far, Joedun Finish the run in just under an hour – but hopefully others can shave early enough this time.
