Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will be released on July 24th in Game Pass. Microsoft announced on Tuesday. It is the first Call of Duty game available on Microsoft’s subscription service under its Activision Blizzard ownership. Modern Warfare 3 will be available on Game Pass for Xbox consoles, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Ultimate.
Activision and lead developer Sledgehammer Games released Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 in November 2023. Modern Warfare 3 is a direct sequel to the 2022 game in the franchise, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2in which players fight alongside series main characters Captain Price, Ghost and the rest of Task Force 141 on their international hunt for the villain Vladimir Makarov. Modern Warfare 3 also includes the series’ traditional multiplayer mode and Zombies, reinterpreted here as a cooperative player versus environment extraction mode.
Microsoft announced earlier this year that the 2024 Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6will be released to Game Pass subscribers on day one. But between this announcement and the October release of BlackOps 6Microsoft has updated its Game Pass subscription offering; the company has increased the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and phased out the base Game Pass offering, replacing it with Xbox Game Pass Standard. The new Game Pass Standard will not include day-one releases – a major change in Microsoft’s strategy.
Microsoft completed its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, 21 months after announcing plans to buy the publisher of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush. Since the deal closed, Microsoft has made little progress in bringing Activision Blizzard’s back catalog to Game Pass. However, Microsoft has acquired Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo4 for Console and PC Game Pass subscribers in March.
